Description of Aceon

Aceon, with the generic name perindopril belongs to the ACE (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme) class of drugs. Its main ingredient is perindopril erbumine. In addition, each tablet also contains lactose, colloidal silica, microcrystalline cellulose, iron oxide, and magnesium stearate.

You can buy Aceon in the form of oral tablets. These tablets are available in the following strengths: 2mg, 4mg, and 8 mg.

Indications & Dosage of Aceon

Aceon treats high blood pressure and prevents heart attack in people suffering from coronary artery disease. It works by blocking the enzymes that are responsible for narrowing the blood vessels. As such, it helps the blood vessels relax, thereby resulting in controlled blood pressure.

The recommended dose for essential hypertension is 4 mg per day. In adults, this recommended dose can be taken as a single dose or as two divided doses. Dosages of more than 8 mg should be administered after proper check-ups and blood pressure monitoring.

For the elderly (aged over 70 years), the initial recommended dose is 2 mg daily in the first week, 4 mg daily in the second week, and 8 mg daily after thereafter (if the drug is well tolerated).

Aceon is not recommended for children.

Side Effects & Interactions of Aceon

Aceon can cause various side effects. If you buy Aceon and use it, you may experience some less severe side effects such as:

  • Back pain
  • Cough
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Skin rashes

Consult the doctor immediately if you experience any of the following effects:

  • Body ache
  • Mouth and throat sores
  • Sudden weight gain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Pale skin/jaundice
  • Weak pulse
  • Slow heart rate

The drugs that may interact with Aceon are:

  • Lithium
  • Gold injections
  • Potassium supplements
  • Salt substitutes containing potassium
  • Water pills

The above list is not complete. Some other drugs may also interact with Aceon. Therefore, inform the doctor about all the other medications you take at present.

Warnings & Precautions of Aceon

You should not take Aceon in the following situations:

  • If you are allergic to ACE Inhibitors
  • If you have a history of allergic reactions including lip/tongue/throat swelling
  • If you have had kidney problems in the past
  • If you are suffering from liver problem/ are on dialysis
  • If you have a family history of angioedema
  • If you are diabetic
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • If you are undergoing any surgery

Extra care should be taken if you are pregnant. Aceon is a pregnancy ‘category D’ drug. Research studies have revealed that using it during pregnancy may even cause death of the unborn. It may also lead to severe complications including hypotension, lung problems, kidney failure, and hampered child growth.

It is not clearly known whether Aceon harms a nursing baby. If you are breastfeeding, do not take it without consulting the doctor.

You should avoid Aceon if you take sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, cold or allergy medicines, etc. Inform your doctor about all the drugs you take beforehand.

Alcohol intake may enhance the side effects of Aceon. As such, you must avoid it during Aceon treatment.
