Description of Aciphex
Aciphex is used for treating medical conditions that are caused by excessive stomach acid. The generic name of this drug is Rabeprazole, and it comes under a class of drugs referred as Proton Pump Inhibhitors, or PPIs.
This drug is meant for oral administration only. You can buy Aciphex in form of oral tablets. The oral tablets come in strength, Aciphex 20 mg. The nonmedical ingredients present in this drug are: sodium hydroxide, propylene glycol, hydroxypropyl cellulose, carnauba wax, magnesium stearate, diacetylated monoglycerides, crospovidone, titanium dioxide, ethylcellulose, sodium stearyl fumarate, and hypromellose phthalate.
Indications & Dosage of Aciphex
Aciphex is indicated for the treatment of GERD, or gastrointestinal reflux disease, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and other certain conditions that occur due to stomach acid. This drug is also used for treating erosive esophagus. Further, Aciphex is used along with other drugs for preventing gastric ulcer in patients who have a H. pylori infection.
Aciphex, like other PPIs, work by reducing the production of stomach acid. It achieves this by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme that plays a key role in the secretion of stomach acid. The reduction in stomach acid allows esophagus as well as ulcers to heal.
The recommended dosage for healing ulcerative GERD in adult patients is Aciphex 20 mg once daily for a period of 4-8 weeks. If the condition does not heal after 8 weeks, you will need to repeat the course.
The recommended dosage for the treatment of duodenal ulcers is Aciphex 20 mg once daily for up to 4 weeks. An additional course may be recommended if the condition does not heal after 4 weeks.
Side Effects & Interactions of Aciphex
You should seek medical help immediately if you experience an allergic reaction after taking Aciphex. Symptoms associated with allergic reaction are: skin rashes, hives, wheezing, trouble swallowing, swelling of the lips, throat, or tongue, facial flushness, or difficulty breathing.
Other serious side effects of this drug may include: uneven heart rate, confusion, dizziness, choking feeling, seizure, muscle cramps or weakness, or jerky muscle movements. Consult your physician if you experience any of these side effects.
Less serious side effects of Aciphex oral tablets may include: nervousness, sleep problems, diarrhea, headache, or upset stomach.
