Description of Amitiza

Amitiza is primarily prescribed to treat the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). This drug is also used to relieve chronic constipation caused due to other reasons in adults. The active ingredient, lubiprostone, is a laxative (chloride channel activator) and it acts by inducing fluid secretion in the intestines which allow the stools to be egested at ease.

Lubiprostone, as Amitiza is generically called, contains the following inactive ingredients in its composition: gelatin, medium-chain triglycerides, sorbitol and purified water. Amitiza is available as pink capsules containing 8mcg of lubiprostone and as orange capsules containing 24mcg of the active ingredient.

Indications & Dosage of Amitiza

Women above the age of 18 can buy Amitiza if they are suffering from IBS. The recommended dosage of Amitizia for such patients is 8mcg capsules two times a day.

For adults with chronic constipation, 24mcg capsules of Amitiza can be taken twice daily.

Amitiza should be consumed along with food and water, preferably at the same time each day. The doctor may decide to alter the dosage of Amitiza in certain individuals in accordance with their medical history and general health. The capsules should be stored in their original containers at room temperature.

Side effects & Interactions of Amitiza
