Description of Androcur

Androcur is a steroidal antiandrogen, and its generic name is Cyproterone. It is available in the form of white, flat-sided, round tablets. Each tablet of Androcur contains 50mg Cyproterone Acetate, aerosil or colloidal silicic acid, lactose, cornstarch, polyvinyl pyrrolidone and magnesium stearate. Androcur is free of tartrazine and gluten.

Indications & Dosage of Androcur

Androcur is an oral medication used for treating prostate cancer. The drug works by blocking the effects of testosterone hormone, causing a reduction in its production in the testicles. Testosterone is essential for the growth of cancer cells.

You can buy Androcur in 50mg and 100mg strengths. Your doctor will recommend you to take Androcur 200 to 300mg per day, taken two or three times a day. If you have gone through orchiectomy and have got your testicles removed, you will be given Androcur 100 to 200mg per day.

Take Androcur after food.

The medicine is also available in the form of an injection. You will receive one Androcur 300mg injection per week, given into your muscle.

Side Effects & Interactions of Androcur

Androcur patients may commonly experience impotence, swelling of the breasts, breast soreness and decreased or increased sexual interest. Inform your doctor at once if any of these become too troublesome. Some serious side effects associated with the drug include:

  • Changes in balance and walking
  • Unsteadiness or clumsiness
  • Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight
  • Inability to move the arms or legs
  • Increased bowel movements or loose stools
  • Loss of energy or strength
  • Skin blistering, bleeding, discoloration or coldness
  • Weight gain
  • Unusually increased hair growth

Also seek medical attention at once if you develop tarry, black or bloody stools, blood in the urine, irregular breathing, pain in the groin, chest or legs, swelling or puffiness of the eyelids, seizures, temporary blindness, sudden slurred speech, loss of coordination, or sudden severe weakness on one side of the body.

Symptoms of an allergy include hives, facial swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing. Discontinue using Androcur if you have any of these symptoms. Seek medical attention if any of these persist even after stopping the drug.

Testosterone, androgens and ethinyl estradiol affect how Androcur works. They may also increase serious side effects of the drug. Therefore, your doctor will not recommend you to buy Androcur if you are already taking any of these drugs at present. Apart from these, also inform your doctor about all other medications you use, including herbal products and health supplements.

Warnings & Precautions of Androcur

Androcur is not meant to be used by patients with an allergy to any of the ingredients in the drug, or those who have reduced kidney or liver function or an active liver disease.

Also inform your doctor beforehand if you have heart disease, diabetes, or if you regularly drink alcoholic beverages.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Such conditions may affect the dosage that should be recommended to you, and how you should use it.
