Description of Atopica

Atopica is a veterinary drug with the generic name cyclosporine. It is a prescription drug, so you can only buy Atopica as per a veterinarian’s prescription. It is often used for the control and treatment of atopic dermatitis in dogs that weigh a minimum 4 pounds. The active ingredient in this medicine, cyclosporine, forms a micro-emulsion upon immediate consumption of the drug.

Indications & Dosage of Atopica

The dosage and duration of treatment with Atopica would be determined by your veterinarian. Atopica is available as an oral tablet in the following strengths- Atopica 10mg, Atopica 25mg, Atopica 50mg and Atopica 100mg. You must give only the prescribed tablet of Atopica to your dog, and as per the exact daily dosage instructed by your veterinarian.

Atopica is recommended to be started at an initial daily dose of 5mg per kg of weight of the dog per day. However, this may vary from 3.3mg to 6.7mg as well. In most cases, Atopica is given as a single dose, and the initial dose is followed for a period of 30 days. After this initial period, your veterinarian may change the dosage of Atopica by reducing the frequency of dosing. This may be done every alternate day or two times per week, until a minimum dose of Atopica with adequate efficacy on the dog is determined.

The tablet of Atopica must be given at least an hour before a meal or 2 hours after it. Do not give two doses of Atopica to your pet to make up for a missed dose. The dose should never be administered more than once a day.

Side Effects & Interactions of Atopica

Atopica is known to cause some serious side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, pruritis, lethargy or depression, anorexia, hepatitis, polyuria or polydipsia and soft stools, erythema and seizures in dogs. If you notice any such side effects in your pet, you must report it to your veterinarian at once. Emergency treatment may be required.

In rare cases, Atopica may also cause excessive shedding, granulomatous lesions or mass, raised nodule on the pinna, hind limb twitch, irritability, hyperactivity, increased sensitivity to light, refusal or reluctance to go out, weight loss and coarse coat. These side effects are rare, but they must be informed to the veterinarian if they do surface.

Atopica must be used carefully if the dog is already being given drugs that affect the P-450 enzyme system. You must inform your veterinarian about any drugs or products you are giving your pet before you buyAtopica.

Warnings & Precautions of Atopica

You must not buy Atopica if your dog has previously suffered from neoplasia. Atopica is a very potent immunosuppressant, so your dog would be more prone to illnesses or neoplasia. This drug is for veterinary use only, and must never be taken by a human. It should be kept away from children. Your dog may suffer from some gastrointestinal problems or gingival hyperplasia during the initial stages of treatment. Atopica has not been confirmed to be safe for dogs that are 6 months of age or younger or those that weigh less than 4 pounds. It must not be given to pregnant, lactating or breeding dogs.
