Description of Axid

Axid is a drug with the generic name nizatidine, which belongs to the drug class known as histamine-2 blockers. This particular drug reduces the level of stomach acid. You can buy Axid for treating stomach and intestinal ulcers. Axid is also prescribed for treating erosive esophagitis and heartburn that occur as a result of gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. This medical condition is characterized by the backing up of acid stomach to the esophagus.

Indications & Dosage of Axid

Axid is available in the form of Pulvules, which are gelatin capsules containing the medication. This medicine can be bought in 2 strengths- Axid 150mg and Axid 300mg. Axid is also available in the form of an oral solution. Your doctor would determine the dosage and duration of treatment with Axid. You must take this drug exactly as per the dosage prescribed for you. If you have been prescribed the oral solution of Axid, you must measure your dose using a special dose measurement cup or spoon. You can ask your pharmacist if you do not have one handy.

Most gastrointestinal ulcers heal after taking Axid for 4 weeks. However, it may also take as long as 8-12 weeks for some ulcers to heal with this drug. You must continue taking Axid for the whole duration of treatment prescribed by your doctor. If you do not see any noticeable improvements after taking Axid for 6 weeks, you must tell your doctor.

Axid may be just one part of a complete treatment program determined by your doctor. Other parts would include diet and lifestyle changes. You must pay attention and follow all other parts of the treatment program for healing your ulcers.
