Description of Azasite

Azasite is an ophthalmic medication with the generic name azithromycin. This particular medicine belongs to the drug class of macrolide antibiotic medications. You can buy Azasite for the treatment of bacterial eye infections. It works by killing the infection causing bacteria. Your doctor may prescribe Azasite for other medical purposes not mentioned above.

Indications & Dosage of Azasite

Azasite is available in 5ml bottles. The sterile solution would contain an equivalent of 5ml azithromycin. Your doctor would determine the dosage and duration of treatment with Azasite. In most cases, patients need to apply Azasite two times a day for 2 days. After the first 2 days, the daily frequency would be reduced to once a day. This would continue for 5 days or more if required.

Your doctor would instruct you on how to apply the eye drops. If you have any doubts about the procedure, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist or refer to the patient information leaflet that comes with Azasite. Given below are the general instructions to apply Azasite eye drops in an infected eye.

  • Tilt your head back and look upwards
  • Pull down the lower eyelid of the infected eye
  • Hold the dropper directly above the eye. Do not look up directly at the dropper
  • Squeeze the prescribed amount of drops into the eye and immediately close your eye
  • Gently apply pressure on the inner corner of the eye towards the nose. This prevents the medicine from draining into the tear duct
  • You must wait for at least 5 minutes if you have to use another drug in the same eye
  • If you have just applied another eye drop, you need to wait for 10 minutes before you administer Azasite

Side Effects & Interactions of Azasite

Azasite may cause severe side effects in rare cases. You must stop using Azasite and contact your doctor immediately if you suffer from any of the following severe side effects:

  • Sore throat or fever
  • Burning sensation in the eyes, swollen tongue or face
  • Pain in the skin, followed by purple or red colored skin rash and blistering or peeling
  • Redness or swelling in the eye
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Feeling like something is stuck in your eye
  • Crusting or drainage in the eye

Azasite may also cause mild side effects such as:

  • Stuffy nose
  • Blurred vision
  • Mild irritation or burning or stinging sensation in the eye

Azasite is an ophthalmic medication, so it is not likely to interact with any other drugs you take. Nevertheless, it is best if you inform your doctor about any drug you are taking before you buy Azasite.

Warnings & Precautions of Azasite

You must not buy Azasite if you have previously suffered from an allergic reaction to azithromycin. Do not apply Azasite when you are wearing contact lenses, since a preservative in this drug is known to discolor contact lenses. If you have already applied Azasite in your eye, you need to wait for at least 15 minutes before you wear your contact lenses again.
