Description of Baytril

Baytril is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infection in cats and dogs. The generic name of the drug is Enrofloxacin, and it belongs to the chemical class Quinolone. It is meant only for veterinary purposes.

Baytril is available in two forms: tablets and injection. You must buy Baytril only as per the instructions of your veterinarian. The tablet is given orally. You may also wrap the tablet in meat or sausage and give it to your pet. The tablets are enteric coated due to their bitter taste. Crushing the tablet and giving it with food will not be a good idea as it will make the bitter taste more apparent. Make sure that your hands are clean and dry before administering the drug to your pet.

Indications & Dosage of Baytril

Baytril treats a number of infections in pets that include infections of the skin, liver, ear, urinary track, prostate, lungs etc. The drug contains Enrofloxacin, which inhibits bacterial DNA-gyrase and prevents DNA supercoiling and synthesis.

Baytril is available in 22.7 mg, 68 mg, and 136 mg strengths. The dosage of the drug depends on the weight of the pet. The normal dosage of Baytril is 5 mg to 10 mg for 5-30 days. For the injection, the dosage is 100 mg per 1 ml. The drug is available in 22.7 mg/ml in 20 m vials, or 5% solution in 20 ml vials for injection. The drug must be taken as per the prescription of the doctor. An overdose may result in retinal damage in the pet. Always keep your pets clean and healthy during treatment. You should not give Baytril to pets that don’t need the medication.

Baytril must be stored in a cool and dry place at room temperature. Make sure that you are not keeping the drug in a bathroom or other wet areas.

Side Effects & Interactions of Baytril

The common side effects of Baytril are:

  • Itching
  • Seizures
  • Diarrhea
  • Decreased appetite
  • Dizziness

Baytril may interact with the following drugs:

  • Sucralfate
  • Theophylline
  • Cyclosporine

Medications that contain zinc, aluminum, magnesium and iron will also react with Baytril. Inform your veterinarian about the complete medical history of your pet.

Warnings & Precautions of Baytril

Before you buy Baytril, make sure that your pet is not allergic to the drug or any of the ingredients in it. During the course of treatment, avoid giving any other drugs to your pets unless the doctor asks you to do so. You must also inform your doctor about the improvements and side effects in the pet during treatment.

Baytril, when given in higher doses, causes retinal damage in some cats. The drug also reduces the seizure threshold in some pets.

Baytril should not be given to pregnant and nursing pets and also to animals that are very young.
