Description of Ceclor

Cefaclor is the active ingredient in Ceclor, and it belongs to the class of cephalosporin antibiotics. The medicine is available in the form of pulvules and oral suspension. Pulvules are gelatin-based capsules containing powdered drugs. Your saliva makes them slick, and they become easier to swallow. Apart from Cefaclor, the pulvules also contain iron oxide, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, silicone, gelatin and cornstarch. Ceclor oral suspension also contains cellulose, xanthan gum, sucrose, sodium lauryl sulfate, silicone, cornstarch and flavors.

Indications & Dosage of Ceclor

Your doctor will recommend you to buy Ceclor in order to treat different bacterial infections in the body, including otitis media, pneumonia, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, urinary tract infections (such as cystitis or pyelonephritis) or skin infections. The medicine works by fighting the bacteria in the body responsible for infection.

Adult patients will be advised to take Ceclor 250mg every 8 hours. Patients with severe infections such as pneumonia may be advised to take Ceclor 500mg. For pediatric patients, Ceclor 20mg/kg per day is given in divided doses every 8 hours. For more serious infections, Ceclor 40mg/kg per day may be recommended. Maximum dosage that a patient can receive is Ceclor 1g per day.

Ceclor works best if taken with meals or within half an hour of taking a meal. Chew the pulvule completely before swallowing.

Side Effects & Interactions of Ceclor

Common side effects associated with Ceclor include:

  • Stomach pain, loss of appetite, constipation, mild nausea
  • Drowsiness, anxiety
  • Increased urination during night
  • Headache
  • Runny nose, cough, throat soreness
  • Vaginal discharge or itching

These are mild side effects of the drug that subside on their own within a few days, as your body become tolerant to the medicine. However, seek medical attention if any of these worsen or persist. Also inform your doctor at once if you develop any serious side effects of Ceclor. Symptoms of such side effects include:

  • Bloody or watery diarrhea
  • Shortness of breath, chest pain
  • Pounding or fast heartbeat
  • Swelling on feet or hands
  • Tingling, redness or warmth under skin
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Fever, joint pain or throat soreness, followed by red skin rash, peeling or severe blistering

Inform your doctor beforehand if you are already taking any liver bacterial vaccines, warfarin or probenecid. Antibiotics may also decrease effects of hormonal contraceptives such as pills, rings or patches. Therefore, your doctor will advise you to use a barrier form of contraception during Ceclor treatment.

Warnings & Precautions of Ceclor

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Ceclor if you have an allergy to any of its ingredients, to any other cephalosporin antibiotics (e.g. cefadroxil or cefdinir) or to pencillins. Also inform your doctor beforehand if you have a kidney disease or intestinal disease such as colitis.

Kidney function may decline with age. Since Ceclor is removed by the kidneys, elderly patients have more risks of suffering from the serious side effects of the drug.

Ceclor is known to pass into breast milk. Therefore, breastfeeding mothers should not use this drug, as it may pass into their breast milk and may cause harm to the nursing infant.
