Description of Celebrex

The generic name of Celebrex is Celecoxib, and it belongs to the therapeutic class of COX-2 inhibitors, under the group of NSAIDs. The medicine works by blocking enzymes in your body that are responsible for producing prostaglandins. Reducing prostaglandin levels helps in decreasing swelling and pain in the body.

You can buy Celebrex in the form of oral capsules. Each Celebrex capsule contains 100mg or 200mg of Celecoxib, along with other inactive ingredients including edible inks, croscarmellose sodium, lactose monohydrate, gelatin, povidone, sodium lauryl sulfate, and magnesium stearate.

Indications & Dosage of Celebrex

Celebrex is indicated for the treatment of inflammation or pain due to conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis, menstrual pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid and primary dysmenorrhea. It can also be used for treating hereditary polyps in the colon.

The dosage of Celebrex depends on the medical condition to be treated:

  • For the treatment of osteoarthritis, your doctor will recommend you to take Celebrex 200mg per day.
  • For rheumatoid arthritis, you will need to take Celebrex 100mg to 200mg twice a day.
  • For patients suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, the dosage will depend on the patient’s weight. If the patient weighs 10 to 25 kgs, the recommended dosage is Celebrex 50mg twice a day. For patients weighing more than 25 kgs, the recommended dosage is Celebrex 100mg twice a day.
  • Celebrex 200 to 400mg daily can be given to patients suffering from ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Celebrex 400mg daily is given to patients with primary dysmenorrhea.

Side Effects & Interactions of Celebrex

Gas or stomach upset may commonly occur as a side effect of Celebrex. However, you should immediately seek medical attention if you develop any of the following symptoms:

  • Swelling on the feet or hands
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Severe headache
  • Pain, warmth or swelling in the groin or calf
  • Increased or decreased urine

In rare cases, Celebrex can also lead to a serious disease of the liver. Notify your doctor immediately if you have unusual fatigue, persistent abdominal or stomach pain, dark urine or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

You should not buy Celebrex along with Cidofovir, as serious drug interactions may take place. Your doctor will also advise you not to take Celebrex if you are already using any of the following medicinal products:

  • Blood thinners (e.g. warfarin)
  • Anti-platelet drugs (e.g. clopidogrel)
  • ACE inhibitors (e.g. lisinopril)
