Description of Celontin

Celontin is an anticonvulsant which works by controlling abnormal electrical activities in the brain. These activities take place whenever a patient goes through a seizure. The active ingredient in Celontin is Methsuximide

You can buy Celontin in the form of oral capsules.

Indications & Dosage of Celontin

Celontin is used for the control and prevention of petit mal and absence seizures in epileptic patients.

Initially, your doctor will advise you to take Celontin 300mg per day for one week. After one week, the dosage can be increased by Celontin 300mg per day for 3 weeks, not exceeding Celontin 1.2g per day. Smaller children are given Celontin 150mg a day. Your doctor may also advise you to take other anticonvulsants along with Celontin.

Side Effects & Interactions of Celontin

Some of the common side effects that Celontin patients may experience include:

  • Dizziness or drowsiness
  • Stomach or abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Lack of coordination
  • Headache

Some Celontin patients may also have suicidal thoughts, mental or mood changes, and depression. Inform your doctor at once if you develop sudden changes in your mood or thoughts and notice signs of depression.

Serious side effects of Celontin include joint pain or swelling, severe tiredness, easy bruising or bleeding, rashes on the nose or cheeks, rapid breathing and symptoms of flu like fever and persistent throat soreness.

Inform your doctor about all the allergies you have. Celontin may contain ingredients which may cause allergic reactions. Symptoms of an allergy include severe dizziness, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling or itching of the face, throat, lips or tongue. Discontinue using the medicine if you develop any of these symptoms, and seek immediate medical help.

Celontin causes dizziness, so you should avoid taking any other medicines that cause the same effect. These include sleeping pills, antihistamines, muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety medicines, antidepressants, narcotic pain relievers, or tranquilizers such as codeine, diphenhydramine, cetirizine, diazepam, zolpidem or alprazolam.

Apart from these, also inform your doctor about all the other drugs you are taking at present, including herbal preparations, health supplements, prescription and non-prescription drugs, and topical applications.

Warnings & Precautions of Celontin

Do not use Celontin if you have an allergy to it or to any inactive ingredients in the medicine. Also do not use it if you have a severe liver or kidney disease.

Do not operate a machine or drive a vehicle immediately after taking a dose of Celontin as it causes dizziness. Limit alcohol intake, as this may worsen this side effect and may lead to a severe mishap.

Also inform your doctor beforehand if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Also inform him or her if you are breastfeeding a child. Based on all these conditions, the doctor will be able to decide whether Celontin is the right medicine for you or not, and what dosage should be prescribed to you, depending on your weight, age and medical condition.
