Description of Cerebyx

When other types of phenytoin are unavailable or deemed inappropriate or less advantageous, you can buy Cerebyx for the treatment of short term parenteral administration if it has been prescribed by your doctor.

Cerebyx is used to control any generalized epilepticus with a convulsive status. It is also used for the prevention and treatment of seizures occurring due o neurosurgery. It is a prodrug, and is intended for perenteral administration. The inactive metabolite present in Cerebyx is phenytoin.

Each vial of the drug contains 75mg/mL of fosphenytoin sodium, which is equivalent to 50 mg/mL of phenytoin sodium after administration. The vials contain a ready mix with water, which is meant for injection administration. Cerebyx is a colorless to pale yellow, clear, sterile solution.

Indications & Dosage of Cerebyx

For Status Epilepticus :

Prior to IV infusion, Cerebyx should be diluted in 5% dextrose or 0.9% saline solution. The dosage should be 15 to 20 mg PE/kg at an administration rate of 100 to 150 mg PE/minute. Continuous monitoring through echocardiogram, respiratory functions and blood pressure is mandatory, and it is essential to monitor the patient after it has been administered, approximately 10 to 20 minutes after infusion as this is the critical time frame when phenytoin concentrations occur in the patient’s body. Maintenance of Cerebyx should be followed after administration, either though oral administration or parenteral administration.

For Nonemergent Loading or Maintenance Dosing :

The loading dose of Cerebyx should be 10 to 20 mg PE/kg through Iv or IM. Continuous monitoring of the patient is necessary, and the drug should not be administered at a rate higher than 150 mg PE/minute.

You can buy Cerebyx as either :

  1. 10 mL vial containing 750 mg of fosphenytoin solution, which is equivalent to 500 mg of phenytoin solution.
  2. 2 mL vial containing 150 mg fosphenytoin solution, which is equivalent to 100 mg of the solution.

Side Effects & Interactions of Cerebyx

It is very important to seek immediate medical attention if any of the following side effects are experienced: Swelling of the lips, tongue and/or throat, hives, or difficulty breathing.

Some of the other side effects include:

  • Ringing in your ears, loss of coordination or balance, slurred speech.
  • Restless muscle movements in your tongue, lips, eyes, jaw or neck, tremors.
  • Urinating more than usual, extreme hunger or thirst.
  • Yellowing of the skin, dark urine, stomach pain, or loss of appetite.
  • Swollen glands, flu like symptoms, fever, chills, body aches.
  • Feeling like you may pass out, easy bruising, unusual bleeding due to any bruising, weakness.
  • Red skin rash, blistering, peeling of the skin, burning, severe itching, numbness and/or a tingly feeling in your groin or other areas of your body.

Some less serious side effects include:

  • Nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth.
  • Headache, tingly feeling under your skin, redness or warmth.

Warnings & Precautions of Cerebyx

Cerebyx administration should not be abruptly discontinued as it may cause increased frequency of seizures. Hypotension may occur, followed by cardiovascular reactions in many patients. It is therefore absolutely necessary to monitor the patient while administering Cerebyx. If there are any signs of a rash, the medication should be discontinued. There are many severe hepatic and hemopoietic conditions that may arise due to this drug. An increase in seizure frequency may occur during pregnancy, and Cerebyx may cause irreparable damage, including death, to the fetus. The potential risks should be adjudged before administering Cerebyx to expecting mothers, nursing mothers, and/or before pregnancy.
