Description of Comtan

Comtan is a catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT) inhibitor, and its generic name is Entacapone. It is given to the patient in the form of oral tablets.

Indications & Dosage of Comtan

Comtan is used for treating the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, including tremors, stiffness, poor muscle control, and muscle spasms. Your doctor may recommend you to buy Comtan along with Levodopa and Carbidopa. It works by blocking COMT enzyme in the body, which is responsible for the breakdown of Levodopa. In this way, Levodopa lasts longer in the patient’s system and the desired effects are achieved more efficiently.

Usually, you will be advised to take one Comtan 200mg tablet with each Levodopa/Carbidopa dose, not exceeding 8 times a day or Comtan 1600mg per day.

You can take Comtan tablets with or without meals. Taking the tablet with food helps prevent nausea, which is a commonly occurring side effect with Entacapone. Drink lots of fluids during Comtan treatment. Seek medical attention if you have persistent diarrhea or vomiting or if you sweat more than usual.

Side Effects & Interactions of Comtan

Comtan patients may commonly experience mild dizziness, diarrhea, stomach pain, tiredness, or back pain. These are mild side effects of the drug and subside as your body adjusts to the medicine. However, you should seek medical help if any of these persist or worsen. Your urine may also become reddish, orange, or brown in color. This is a common side effect of Comtan and is harmless.

Some serious side effects associated with the medication include:

  • Nausea or sweating
  • Fever, confusion, sweating, or stiff muscles
  • Worsening cough, trouble concentrating or fever
  • Hallucinations
  • Persistent diarrhea, increased urination, extreme thirst, leg discomfort, weight loss, limp feeling, muscle weakness, or uneven heart rate
  • Tremors or uncontrollable or twitching movements in the eyes, tongue, lips, arms, legs or face
  • Extreme thirst, feeling hot, heavy sweating, dry and hot skin, or inability to urinate
  • Muscle pain, weakness or tenderness accompanied by dark colored urine, unusual tiredness and fever

Before you buy Comtan, inform your doctor if you are already taking any of the following medicines:

  • MAO inhibitors (e.g. isocarboxazid or furozolidone)
  • Antihistamines (e.g. cetrizine or diphenhydramine)
  • Sleeping pills or anti-anxiety medicines (e.g. diazepam or alprazolam)
  • Narcotic pain relievers (e.g. codeine)
  • Other drugs for treating Parkinson’s disease (e.g. rasagiline or selegiline)
  • Muscle relaxants

Warnings & Precautions of Comtan

Before taking Comtan, inform your doctor if you have low blood pressure, a liver problem, or a history of alcoholism.

As this drug causes dizziness, you should avoid driving a vehicle or doing any such task that requires complete alertness immediately after taking a dose.

Elderly patients may have increased sensitivity to the side effects of Comtan, especially confusion and drowsiness. Such patients are advised to use this drug with caution. Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are also advised to use Comtan only if clearly indicated, as its safety for such women has not yet been established.
