Description of Dantrium

Dantrium is a muscle relaxant. It is used to treat muscle stiffness and spasms caused by conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy or multiple sclerosis. Its generic name is Dantrolene.

Dantrium is used to prevent muscle cramping caused by nerve disorders and special cases of Malignant Hyperthermia (high fever) that may occur during surgery with certain kinds of anesthesia. It contains the active ingredient Dantrolene Sodium which interferes with the nerve signals that the muscles receive, making them less sensitive to the nerve signals. As a result, the muscles relax and cramps reduce. It is available in the form of capsules for oral administration in the following strengths: Dantrium 20mg, Dantrium 25mg, Dantrium 50mg, and Dantrium 100mg

The nonmedical ingredients in Dantrium are: edible black ink, iron oxide red, gelatin, magnesium stearate, lactose, starch, talc, carnauba wax, titanium dioxide.

Indications & Dosage of Dantrium

For best results, it is important to titrate and individualize the dose. Each dose should be maintained for seven days to observe its effect and then be increased. The following schedule is recommended :

  • 25 mg once daily for 7 days
  • 25 mg twice a day for 7 days
  • 50 mg twice a day for 7 days
