What is a Generic?
Description of Dostinex
Dostinex is an oral drug prescribed to individuals with very high prolactin levels in the body. Cabergoline, the active compound in this drug belonging to the class of ergot medications, is a dopamine receptor antagonist. In patients who buy Dostinex, the pituitary gland is affected by its active ingredient, Cabergoline, to lower its level of prolactin production. The generic form is known as Cabergoline.
Dostinex is available as 0.5mg tablets, each containing the following inactive compounds: lactose, USP and leucine.
Indications & Dosage of Dostinex
Dostinex is indicated for the treatment of the following medical conditions :
- Idiopathic hyperprolactinemic disorders;
- Hyperprolactinemic disorders as a result of pituitary adenomas;
Since Dostinex works by regulating hormone levels in the body, maintaining the dosage as prescribed by the doctor is highly essential. The usual starting dose of Dostinex is 0.25mg taken two times in 7 days. Though the doctor may decide to increase the dose strength of this drug gradually, it is advisable to limit it to 1mg two times a week.
Dostinex tablets may be taken with or without food and must be swallowed whole with water each time.
It is important for patients who buy Dostinex to visit the doctor regularly for monitoring their prolactin levels.
This drug should be stored at temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius.
Side Effects & Interactions of Dostinex
Each drug is capable of producing certain adverse effects in the body. Dostinex too has its own set of mild, moderate and severe side effects. It is necessary for patients to discuss, with their doctor, the possibilities of adverse effects during Dostinex treatment. Some of the minor side effects of this drug includes:
- Nausea or vomiting

- Mood changes, anxiety, restlessness

Dostinex is known to interact with many medicines and hence patients may be required to stop taking some of them or adjust doses to continue Dostinex as their medication. Some drugs known to interact with Dostinex are: metoclopramide, anti-psychotic medications like haloperidol, chlorpromazine, metoclopramide and thiothixene.
Warnings & Precautions of Dostinex

- Liver disorder
- Hypertension
- Diseases related to the heart valve
- Pericardial, pulmonary or retroperitoneal fibrosis
Patients who are allergic to the ingredients of Dostinex or other ergot medicines should avoid using this drug.
