Description of Epzicom

Epzicom is a combination of two antiviral drugs: Lamivudine and Abacavir. This combination medicine comes under the category of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. It is administered in the form of oral tablets. Each film coated orange tablet contains 600mg Abacavir sulfate, 300mg Lamivudine, magnesium stearate, sodium starch glycolate and microcrystalline cellulose.

Indications & Dosage of Epzicom

Epzicom is an oral medication used for treating HIV. This is a virus which can cause AIDS in the patient. You must remember that this medicine does not cure HIV or AIDS, but can only relieve its symptoms and reduce complications due to the disease, such as cancer and new infections. The drug works by keeping HIV virus from growing inside the patient’s body.

Usually, your doctor will advise you to take one Epzicom 600/300mg tablet once a day. Your doctor may advise you to buy Epzicom along with other antiretroviral agents too.

You can take Epzicom tablets with or without meals.

Side Effects & Interactions of Epzicom

Some common side effects associated with Epzicom include:

  • Strange dreams or sleep problems
  • Depression, headache, anxiety
  • Mild diarrhea
  • Changes in location or shape of body fat, especially in the legs, arms, breasts, trunk, neck and face

These are mild side effects and subside on their own as your body becomes tolerant to Epzicom. However, you should notify your doctor at once if any of these worsen or persist. Also seek medical attention immediately if you develop any serious side effects of the drug. Such symptoms include:

  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin, jaundice, clay-colored stools, dark urine, loss of appetite, low fever, stomach pain
  • Chills, fever, flu symptoms, body aches
  • Sores or white patches on lips or inside mouth
  • Lactic acidosis, identified by cold or numbness in the legs or arms, muscle weakness or pain, stomach pain, trouble breathing, uneven or fast heartbeat, vomiting and nausea, tiredness, dizziness, extreme weakness

Stop using Epzicom and seek medical attention if you develop symptoms of an allergy after taking the tablets. Such symptoms include hives, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing and facial swelling.

Some drugs that may interact adversely with Epzicom include Ribavirin, methadone, interferon Alfa and zalcitabine. Also do not buy Epzicom with any other medicines that contain Lamivudine or Abacavir. Also do not take Emtricitabine during Epzicom treatment, as it is similar to Lamivudine.

In addition to all these drugs, inform your doctor about all other prescription or non-prescription drugs you are taking at present or have used in the recent past. Do not forget to mention herbal products and health supplements too.

Warnings & Precautions of Epzicom

Do not use Epzicom if you have an allergy to Lamivudine, Abacavir or to any other similar medicines. Also inform your doctor beforehand if you have kidney disease, high blood pressure, heart disease or risk factors for heart disease such as high cholesterol, diabetes or if you smoke.

Epzicom is not meant to be given to patients less than 18 years of age.
