Description of Exelon
Rivastigmine tartrate is the generic name of Exelon and it is available in the form of a fine crystalline powder which is soluble in ethanol, water, and acetonitrile. It comes in the form of capsules and oral solution. Exelon capsules contain 1.5mg, 3mg, 4.5mg and 6mg rivastigmine tartrate, while the oral solution contains 2 mg/mL of rivastigmine tartrate. The inactive ingredients in Exelon capsules include magnesium stearate, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, silicon dioxide, and microcrystalline cellulose, while the inactive ingredients in the oral solution include sodium benzoate, citric acid, sodium citrate, purified water, and D&C yellow #10. Indications & Dosage of Exelon
Exelon is prescribed for improving the function of various nerve cells within the human brain. It is administered to patients who are suffering from mild to moderate dementia associated with Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.
The recommended dose of Exelon for the treatment of dementia related to Alzheimer's is 6-12 mg per day. This dose needs to be administered twice a day with the starting dose being Exelon 1.5 mg. The initial dosage should be followed by patients for at least 2 weeks and if required, doctors can then increase the dosage to Exelon 3mg. The maximum recommended dose is Exelon 12 mg/day.
