Description of Gabitril

Tiagabine hydrochloride is the generic name of Gabitril and is available in the form of tablets. You can buy Gabitril only on prescription as it is an anti-epilepsy drug. It is available in strengths of 2 mg, 4 mg, 12 mg, and 16 mg and has to be taken orally. The inactive ingredients of Gabitril include colloidal silicon dioxide, ascorbic acid, titanium dioxide, hydroxypropyl cellulose, lactose, hypromellose, hydrogenated vegetable oil wax, microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, pregelatinized starch, and crospovidone.

Indications & Dosage of Gabitril

Gabitril is prescribed to adults and children over 12 years of age who suffer from partial epileptic seizures. It is normally administered as adjunctive therapy.

Gabitril doses depend on the type of seizures and the age of the patient. The recommended initial dose for 12 to 18 year old adolescents and teens is Gabitril 4 mg once a day. In the second week the daily dose can be increased by another 4 mg and thereafter, the total dose can be increased by 8 mg, which equals to Gabitril 32 mg per day. A Gabitril 32 mg per day dose can be divided into 3 to 4 doses that can be taken with or without food. In adults over the age of 18 years, the recommended initial dose is Gabitril 4 mg once a day. The maximum recommended doses for an adult should not exceed Gabitril 56 mg per day and it should be divided into two or four doses as required.
