Description of Geodon

The generic name of Geodon is ziprasidone. This drug falls under the class of medications known as atypical antipsychotics. Geodon is mainly used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It is also used as a reserved drug for patients who fail to respond to other typical antipsychotic agents. You can buy Geodon under the guidance of your physician if you are suffering from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder which results in extreme agitation.

Geodon works by blocking serotonin and dopamine receptors like other antipsychotic drugs. There have been no weight gain or hypercholesterolemia cases reported during Geodon use, unlike the other antipsychotic drugs, which distinguishes it from other antipsychotic drugs.

Indications & Dosage of Geodon

Geodon is effective in treating severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia, the characteristics of which are distorted emotions, perceptions, and thoughts. Geodon helps in symptomatic management of auditory and visual hallucinations and delusions. Geodon can also be used to treat bipolar disorder in combination with other drugs like valproic acid and lithium for symptomatic management.

Geodon is available in oral and intramuscular form. The recommended dose is Geodon 20 mg twice daily to be taken with food. The effectiveness of oral Geodon is reduced when taken on an empty stomach. The intramuscular form of Geodon is available as 20 mg vials. These should be reconstituted with 1.2 mL of water and should be administered as a single dose. The intramuscular dose is mainly used for fast symptomatic relief from schizophrenia or bipolar symptoms. The maximum oral dose of Geodon is 80 mg twice a day.

Side Effects & Interactions of Geodon

The common side effects of Geodon are fatigue, nausea, constipation, dizziness, diarrhea, rash, and tremors. Studies have reported these side effects occurring in 1 in every 15 patients. The slightest risk of a significant increase in QT interval is also present with Geodon with a risk of a serious change in heart rhythm.

Another slight risk is orthostatic low blood pressure with occurrences of 1 in 200 patients. This results in lightheadedness and dizziness. You must exercise caution while driving or operating heavy machinery while on Geodon. Long-term Geodon therapy can result in involuntary movements of the lips, jaw and tongue- symptoms collectively known as tardive dyskinesia.

The most potential fatal condition associated with antipsychotic drugs is neuroleptic malignant syndrome. This results in high fever, altered mental status, muscle rigidity, irregular blood pressure or pulse, and diaphoresis. Consult your doctor immediately if you have any of the above symptoms.

The concomitant use of Geodon is contraindicated with the following drugs:

  • Antiarrhythmics
  • Arsenic trioxide
  • Chlorpromazine
  • Dofetilide
  • Gatifloxacin
  • Droperidol
  • Pimozide

Warnings & Precautions of Geodon

Before you buy Geodon, you must be aware of the potentially increased risks of stroke and heart failure, especially in the case of geriatric patients who suffer from dementia. Patients should discuss the various risk factors of Geodon with their physician. There are other safer treatments available for behavioral problems related to dementia in elderly patients.

If patients are using Geodon with other antipsychotic medications, they must be clearly aware of the side effects of the other medications.

Geodon should be exactly administered as prescribed the physician. The doctor should also be informed if you are suffering from diseases like diabetes mellitus or a seizure disorder before starting Geodon therapy.
