Description of Gleevec

The generic name of Gleevec is imatinib. Gleevec falls under the class of drugs known as antineoplastic agents. The main application of Gleevec is in the treatment for GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumor) and CML (chronic myelogenous leukemia). Gleevec therapy is also effective in stopping tumor growth in cases of GIST after surgical resection. It is also used for the treatment of other conditions like mastocytosis or hypereosinophilic syndrome. You can buy Gleevec only after consulting your physician if you are suffering from the above-mentioned conditions. Imatinib is basically a protein-tyrosine kinase inhibitor which works by preventing the growth of tumor cells.

Indications & Dosage of Gleevec

Gleevec is the preferred first-line treatment for newly diagnosed CML in pediatric and adult patients whose disease has entered the chronic phase. Gleevec is also used for patients with metastatic or nonsurgical GIST.

Gleevec is available in oral form. The recommended dose for adults is Gleevec 400 mg or 600 mg once daily with meals, and the dose should be administered with a sufficient amount of water, around 250 mL, to reduce gastric irritation. For patients who are prescribed 800 mg as a daily dose, Gleevec should be administered in the form of 400 mg two times a day to decrease iron exposure.

Patients who have swallowing difficulties with Gleevec film-coated tablets of should mix them with water or apple juice in the proportion of 2:1 (example: 400 mg tablet and 200 mL of water/apple juice), and then stir and drink the solution immediately after the tablet is completely dissolved.

Side Effects & Interactions of Gleevec

Before you buy Gleevec, you must notify your doctor if you are allergic to any imatinib ingredient. The common and minor side effects of Gleevec are anxiety, cough, constipation, nausea, diarrhea, alopecia, night diaphoresis, decreased appetite, abdominal pain, throat pain, fatigue, insomnia, or weakness. If these side effects become worse or persist for a longer period, it will be advisable for the patient to seek a physician's guidance.

The more severe side effects that warrant immediate medical attention are allergic reactions such as rash, shortness of breath, hives, or swelling in the face or mouth. Other severe side effects include melena, musculoskeletal pain, chest pain, confusion, blood in the urine, arrhythmias, change in voice, edema of the extremities or eyes, difficulty swallowing, coffee-ground emesis, or yellowed skin or eyes.

The use of Gleevec along with warfarin is strictly contraindicated as this increases the risk of bleeding. When a patient is in need of anticoagulation, warfarin should be substituted with heparin. The other drugs that interact with Gleevec are:

  • Acetaminophen
  • Antifungals
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Carbamazepine
  • Cyclosporine
  • Dexamethasone
  • Erythromycin
  • Phenobarbital

Warnings & Precautions of Gleevec

Gleevec has been known to cause dizziness. The side effect of dizziness will get worse if Gleevec is taken along with alcohol or other sedatives. Patients are requested to abstain from driving or performing similar tasks where alertness is required during treatment. Gleevec should never be taken more than the prescribed dose without consulting a physician.

Patients should avoid activities that can result in injuries such as lacerations, abrasions, and bruising. You should avoid contact with patients with infections such as flu and cold. Patients should not receive immunization shots such as measles, mumps, tetanus, and etc while on Gleevec therapy.

Patients should check their weight daily in the morning and should make a log of it. If you notice significant weight gain in the range of 4 to 6 pounds, consult your doctor.
