Description of Glyset

Glyset is an oral diabetes medication with the generic name Miglitol. It belongs to a group of medicines known as alpha-glucosidase inhibitors. Glyset is available in the form of a tablet. It is supplied in three strengths such as Glyset 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg. The drug is a prescription medication, so you need to consult your doctor before you buy Glyset online.

Indications & Dosage of Glyset

Glyset is indicated to treat high blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. The drug may be prescribed alone, along with insulin or other diabetes pills. However, the drug should not be used with similar drugs such as Acarbose.

Miglitol, the active ingredient in Glyset, blocks the enzymes that are needed to digest carbohydrates, thus preventing digestion of carbohydrates in the food. This action of the drug slows down the absorption of carbohydrates from the diet, which prevents rising of sugar levels after a meal.

Your doctor will decide the dose of Glyset and give you specific instructions regarding how to take it. The dosage of Glyset depends on factors such as your medical condition and response to the treatment.

The recommended dose should be taken with first bite of the meal. The starting dose for type 2 diabetes adult patients is one Glyset 25mg tablet, three times daily. After 4-8 weeks, the dosage may be increased to one Glyset 50mg tablet, three times daily. After additional 12 weeks period, your doctor may consider increasing the dosage to one Glyset 100mg tablet, three times daily if necessary.

Side Effects & Interactions of Glyset

Like all other medicines, Glyset may also cause mild to severe side effects in some patients. However, not all people who use this medication experience side effects. As a matter of fact, many people who use Glyset do not complain about any side effects.

Glyset may cause less severe side effects such as bloating, passing gas, abdominal pain, excess air or gas in the intestines or stomach, loose or soft stools, or increase in bowel movements. Consult your doctor if any of these side effects become bothersome.

Glyset may potentially interact with other medicines you are using and cause side effects. Tell your doctor if you are using drugs that increase your blood sugar levels such as protease inhibitors, diuretics, Prednisone, certain anti-psychotic drugs, or Hydrochlorothiazide. This is not a complete list of drugs that interact with Glyset. To know more about drug interactions, refer to the information leaflet provided with Glyset.

Before you buy Glyset, inform the doctor about every drug you are using which includes prescription drugs, over the counter medications and herbal supplements.

Warnings & Precautions of Glyset

You should not use Glyset if you are hypersensitive to any ingredient in it. It may not be the right drug for people with certain medical problems such as bowel/intestinal problems, intestinal blockage, diabetic ketoacidosis, absorption/digestive disorder. Before starting the treatment, tell the doctor about your medical history of kidney disease.

Glyset is listed as a category B pregnancy drug. Pregnant women, nursing mothers or women planning to get pregnant should buy Glyset only after learning about the benefits and risks of using the drug from their doctor.
