Description of Lescol XL

Lescol XL is a drug primarily prescribed for lowering cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. It belongs to the class of drugs termed ‘statins’, Lescol XL blocks an enzyme called HMG CoA reductase which is responsible for producing cholesterol. The generic name of Lescol XL is Fluvastatin. Another drug containing the same active ingredient, fluvastatin, is known as Lescol. Lescol is a regular release tablet. Patients who want to buy Lescol XL can differentiate the two drugs by their form. While Lescol is available as capsules, the counterpart is supplied as Lescol XL 80mg extended-release oral tablets.

The inactive ingredients present in Lescol XL tablets are : hydroxypropyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, potassium bicarbonate, magnesium stearate, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, povidone, polyethylene glycol 8000 and titanium dioxide.

Indications & Dosage of Lescol XL

Lescol XL tablets are indicated in patients who do not respond well to low cholesterol diets and exercise routines for reducing the amount of LDL and triglycerides in their body. Some patients who stand high risks of heart problems related to cholesterol are also advised to buy Lescol XL.

The extended release form of fluvastatin tables are usually recommended to be taken once daily. However, since Lescol XL treats a serious condition in the body and has several potentially adverse side effects and interactions, the doctor may prescribe a different dosage. It is essential to adhere to such instructions. The safe maximum daily dosage of Lescol XL is 80mg.

The tablets should be swallowed whole with water (taking care not to chew, crush or break it) at approximately the same time each day, consistently with or without food.

Regular blood tests should be conducted to monitor the changing levels of cholesterol in the body.

Side Effects & Interactions of Lescol XL

Fluvastatin may cause potential harm to certain organs in the body. The symptoms of developing disorders or underlying disturbances may manifest as side effects of Lescol XL. Of course, such cases are not very frequent and highly individualized. Common side effects of Lescol XL are usually mild and temporary by nature. Some of them are:

  • Indigestion

  • Pain in the muscles or joints
  • Sleeping trouble

Some of the more serious side effects of Lescol XL which should immediately be reported to a medical expert are:

  • Unusual tingling, numbness, prickling sensations in the limbs and muscles, problems with balance etc. as symptoms of nervous damage.

It is necessary for Lescol XL patients to constantly stay in touch with their doctors for close monitoring of health conditions during treatment.

The drug present in Lescol XL potentially interacts with a large number of other medications like NSAIDS, niacin, amiodarone, corticosteroids, digoxin, fibrates and warfarin. Patients should never use Lescol XL without consulting their doctor regarding their medical history and use of other medications and their impact on fluvastatin therapy.
