General Information on Levsin
An anticholinergic agent, Levsin is indicated for the treatment of bladder spasms, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), and diverticulosis. The generic name of this drug is Hyoscyamine.
This drug works by reducing the secretion of stomach acid and relaxing intestinal muscles. Levsin is administered orally. It is available in form of oral tablets which come in strength, Levsin 0.125 mg. That is, each oral tablet contains 0.125 of hyoscyamine sulfate. Other ingredients (inactive) present in this drug are: stearic acid, mannitol, magnesium stearate, lactose monohydrate, and starch.
Side effects of Levsin
You should not buy Levsin if you have:
- Myasthenia gravis, heart problems, or glaucoma
- Severe esophagus or bowel problems
- Bladder, stomach, or bowel blockage
Patients who are allergic to Hyoscyamine or any other ingredient present in Levsin should also not use this drug. An allergic reaction to Levsin may lead cause skin rashes, facial flushness, irritation, hives, or trouble breathing.

The recommended dosage in adults and children over 12 years is 1-2 Levsin tablets after every 4 hours or as required. The maximum dosage is 12 Levsin tablets in a day.
The recommended dosage in pediatric patients in age bracket 2-12 years is ½ -1 Levsin tablets after every 4 hours or as required. The maximum dosage is 6 Levsin tablets in a day.
You should take your medication 40-60 minutes before consuming a meal. Do not take Levsin along with an antacid, as the latter reduces the absorption rate of Levsin.
Interactions
You may experience unwanted drug interactions if you take Levsin in combination with certain drugs. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor or pharmacist about all other drugs that you are taking, especially if you are using an:
- Amantadine antihistamine
- Any other anticholinergics
- Narcotic pain medication
- MAO inhibitor
- Metoclopramide or ketoconazole
