Description of Lofibra

Lofibra has Fenofibrate as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the class of antihyperlipidemic agents. Other inactive ingredients contained in the drug include gelatin, titanium dioxide, talc, sodium lauryl sulfate, pregelatinized starch, povidone, magnesium stearate, lactose monohydrate, and crospovidone and croscarmellose sodium. Lofibra is given to the patient in the form of oral capsules.

Indications & Dosage of Lofibra

Lofibra is an oral medication used for reducing bad cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL in the patient’s blood, and increasing good cholesterol or HDL levels. It works by increasing enzymes in the patient’s body which help in the breakdown of fats in the blood. This reduces the risk of a stroke, heart attack or pancreatitis. In addition to taking the drug on time, your doctor will also advise you to maintain a low fat/low cholesterol diet, avoid alcohol intake, exercise regularly, quit smoking, and lose weight.

You can buy Lofibra capsules in 54mg, 67mg, 100mg, 134mg, 160mg and 200mg strengths. The dosage of the drug recommended to you depends on your medical condition, its severity, and your response to the drug.

Taking the capsule with food helps absorb it faster. You can also take Lofibra without food if a stomach upset occurs. You will have to swallow the capsule whole without breaking, crushing or chewing it. In addition to taking Lofibra, follow your doctor’s instructions regarding weight control, exercise, and a diet plan.

Side Effects & Interactions of Lofibra

Indigestion, gas, bloating, skin rash and joint pain are the common side effects of Lofibra. Inform your doctor immediately if any of these worsen or persist. Some patients may also develop severe stomach pain, fever, vomiting, nausea or unusual weakness during Lofibra treatment. Seek medical attention to get them treated as soon as possible.

The drug may also lead to rhabdomyolysis in some patients, a serious condition associated with the muscles. Inform your doctor immediately if you develop muscle pain, weakness or tenderness during Lofibra treatment, especially if accompanied by fever and other flu like symptoms.

Using Lofibra for a long period may lead to a serious problem of the liver and gallbladder, or gallbladder stones. Therefore, inform your doctor at once if you have symptoms such as severe pain in the abdomen or stomach, persistent vomiting or nausea, dark urine, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

Your doctor will not advise you to take Lofibra along with blood thinners (e.g. warfarin), cyclosporine (e.g. Neoral, Gengraf) or other drugs for lowering cholesterol (e.g. fluvastatin, atorvastatin, lovastatin or cerivastatin).

Warnings & Precautions of Lofibra

Do not buy Lofibra if you are suffering from hepatitis, cirrhosis, severe kidney disease or gallbladder disease. Special tests and dosage adjustments will be needed if you have an underactive thyroid, hypothyroidism or diabetes.

Breastfeeding mothers are not advised to use Lofibra, as it may pass into breast milk and harm the nursing infant. Pregnant women should also use it with caution, as it is not yet known whether Lofibra can harm the unborn child or not.

Avoid alcohol intake during Lofibra treatment, as it may increase triglyceride levels in your body and even damage your liver.
