Description of Lotrel

Lotrel is a combination of two drugs: Amlodipine and Benazepril. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker, while Benazepril is an ACE inhibitor. You can buy Lotrel in the form of oral capsules.

Indications & Dosage of Lotrel

Lotrel is a combination drug used for the treatment of high blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure in turn helps in preventing stroke, heart attack or severe kidney related problems. The drug works by relaxing your blood vessels so that blood is allowed to flow through them more easily.

Lotrel capsules are available in strengths of 10/40mg, 10/20mg, 5/40mg, 5/20mg, 5/10mg and 2.5/10mg Amlodipine/Benazepril. The dose prescribed to you depends on the severity of your hypertension and your response to treatment. Other factors that your doctor may consider include your age, weight, other medical conditions you are suffering from, and other medicines you are taking at present. The anti-hypertensive effects of Lotrel are achieved after around 2 weeks of starting the treatment.

Usually, you will be advised to take only one capsule a day, preferably at the same time each day. You can take Lotrel with or without meals.

Side Effects & Interactions of Lotrel

The mild side effects associated with Lotrel include cough, headache, dizziness, flushing, sleeping problems, muscle pain, constipation, diarrhea, and loss of libido. Seek medical help if any of these become too bothersome.

Seek medical help immediately if you develop any serious side effects of Lotrel. These may include:

• Chest pain
• Difficulty swallowing
• Stopped or decreased urination
• Rapid weight gain or swelling
• Chills, flu symptoms, body ache, throat soreness, fever
• Pain in the upper stomach, nausea, itching, dark urine, loss or appetite, clay-colored stools, yellowing of the eyes or skin

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Lotrel or will advise you to exercise special caution if you are taking any of the following medicinal products at present:

• Gold injections for treating arthritis
• Shots for bee-sting allergy
• NSAIDs (e.g. aspirin or ibuprofen)
• Potassium supplements (e.g. K-Dur or KIor-Con)
• Salt substitutes containing potassium
• Diuretics (e.g. amiloride or furosemide)

Warnings & Precautions of Lotrel

Do not use Lotrel if you have an allergy to Benazepril, Amlodipine or any ACE inhibitors (e.g. captopril, moexipril or quinapril). Also do not take this drug if you have a history of angioedema.

Special precautions and tests will be needed if you have any of the following conditions:

• Kidney or liver disease
• Congestive heart failure or heart disease
• Diabetes
• You are on dialysis
• You are following a low-salt diet

Pregnant women are not advised to buy Lotrel, as it may cause death or injury to the unborn child, especially if taken during the 2nd or 3rd trimester. The drug can also pass into breast milk and may harm the nursing baby. Therefore, breastfeeding mothers are also not advised to use Lotrel unless they consult their doctor.
