Description of Mesasal

Mesasal is medication with the generic name 5-aminosalicylic acid, also known as 5-ASA or simply as mesalamine. This particular medication is part of a drug class called anti-inflammatories, and it reduces inflammation in the bowel. You can buy Mesasal in the form of an oral tablet. The oral form of this medication is available as a Mesasal 500mg tablet. You must only buy the brand and form of Mesasal that has been prescribed by your doctor.

Indications & Dosage of Mesasal

Mesasal is indicated for treating mild to moderate forms of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Different brands and versions of Mesasal are designed for use in different parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Ulcerative colitis is known to affect only the rectum and colon, while Crohn’s disease can affect the entire gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to anus. Your doctor may prescribe Mesasal for other medical conditions as well.

The dosage and duration of treatment with Mesasal would be determined by your doctor. You must never take a dosage of Mesasal greater than what was prescribed for you, as it may lead to an overdose. You must also not start, stop or change your dosage of Mesasal without talking to your doctor, or share your medication with others even if they seem to suffer from the same symptoms as you.

Your doctor would instruct you on how to use Mesasal. An oral tablet of Mesasal must be swallowed whole without breaking the outer coating. You can take a missed dose as soon as possible, but do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose. If you remember your last dose and its already time for the next one, skip the missed dose and continue taking Mesasal as your doctor prescribed.
