Description of Mexitil

Mexitil has Mexiletine Hydrochloride as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the class of antiarrhythmic agents. You can buy Mexitil in the form of oral capsules, available in 150mg, 200mg and 250mg strengths. In addition to the major ingredient, the capsules also contain inactive ingredients, including corn starch, colloidal silicon dioxide, gelatin, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, simethicone and pharmaceutical glaze.

Indications & Dosage of Mexitil

Mexitil is used for treating certain serious types of irregular heartbeat, such as persistent ventricular tachycardia. It helps in restoring normal rhythm of the heart, so that regular and steady heartbeat can be maintained. The medicine works by blocking electric signals in the patients’ heart which cause irregular heartbeat. Treating irregular heartbeat helps in reducing risks of developing blood clots, strokes or heart attacks. In some cases, Mexitil can also be used for treating numbness, pain and tingling due to a certain nerve problem known as peripheral neuropathy.

The treatment usually starts with Mexitil 200mg taken every 8 hours. After 2-3 days, the dosage can be adjusted, depending on your response to the drug. You will be advised to take the capsules with and antacid or food. If the desired results are not achieved with 200mg every 8 hours, the dosage can be increased to Mexitil 400mg every 8 hours. The maximum dose that a patient can receive in a day is Mexitil 1200mg.
