Description of Onglyza

Onglyza helps in controlling blood sugar levels. It works by regulating the insulin count after eating. Onglyza is meant for patients with type 2 diabetes or non-insulin-dependent diabetes. The saxagliptin present in Onglyza acts as an orally-active inhibitor of the DPP4 enzyme. It may be used in combination with other diabetes medications, but it is not to be used for the treatment of type 1 diabetes.

Do not buy Onglyza if you are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis and are allergic to saxagliptin. Also remember to inform your physician about any kidney diseases you may have or if you are on dialysis.

Indications & Dosage of Onglyza

Onglyza contains 5mg saxagliptin or 2.5mg saxagliptin. The tablets also include inactive ingredients like microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, lactose monohydrate and croscarmellose sodium. The film coating on the tablet has poluethylene glycol, talc, polyvinyl alcohol, iron oxides and titanium dioxide.

The recommended dosage of Onglyza is 2.5 mg to 5 mg once daily.

Dosage adjustments are not recommended for patients with kidney impairment. However, the dosage should not be higher than 2.5 mg for patients with severe kidney disease or dialysis patients. Since the dosage is recommended to be regulated based on the renal conditions of the patient, assessment of renal function should be done prior to the initiation of treatment. The dose should be limited to 2.5 mg when co-administered with any other strong cytochrome P450 3A4/5 inhibitors.

You can buy Onglyza tablets as:

  1. 5 mg tablets that are pink in color, biconvex in shape, film coated, round with ‘5’ printed on one side, and ‘4215’ printed on the other side in blue ink.

Or :

  1. 2.5 mg pale yellow to light yellow tablets, biconvex in shape, round, film coated with ‘2.5’ printed on one side, and ‘4214’ printed on the reverse side in blue ink.

Onglyza should be stored at 20°C to 25°C, and excursions are allowed at 15°C to 30°C.

If you suffer from any allergic effects while using the drug, discontinue its use immediately.
