Description of Permax
Permax is a drug used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease occurs because of the lack of a chemical in the brain called dopamine. Permax works by activating dopamine and serotonin receptors and as such, the drug is used in patients suffering from this condition. The generic name of Permax is pergolide.
Permax was withdrawn from the US market in 2007 after several reports were published which proved that the drug caused certain valvular disorders. It is still available in some other countries, however, and people can buy Permax in three different strengths: Permax 1mg, Permax 50mcg, and Permax 250mcg.
Indications & Dosage of Permax
Permax is indicated for the treatment of the various problems like stiffness, poor muscle control, spasms and tremors associated with Parkinson’s disease. It is generally used along with certain other drugs to treat Parkinson’s disease.
The directions for use suggested by the doctor should be followed carefully while using Permax. Altering the dosage amounts may lead to severe health complications. The drug should be taken with a full glass of water. Regular use of the drug is advised for best results.
Use of the drug should not be stopped abruptly during treatment with Permax. Doing so can lead to serious health complications like severe confusion, muscle rigidity, etc.
Lastly, Permax should be stored at room temperature, well away from excess moisture and heat.
Side effects & Interactions of Permax
Permax users can experience several side effects. Some side effects do minimal harm to the body and wear off within a short period of time. Some of the minor Permax side effects are:

- Drowsiness and fatigue;
- Dry mouth;

- Vomiting and mild nausea
The occurrence of some other side effects is not surprising as well although the occur more rarely. However, these side effects need to be dealt with through medical help, because they are of a serious nature. Some of the major Permax side effects are:
- Severe allergic reactions like breathing issues, skin rashes, hives, swelling in various parts of the body, etc.;

A doctor should be consulted before using substances like thiothixene, metoclopramide, haloperidol and certain phenothiazine. Generally, a doctor alters the dosage to accumulate two conflicting medications. Medicines like antidepressants and alcohol should be avoided while using Permax as they increase the dizziness experienced during Permax use.

Patients who are allergic to pergolide should not buy Permax. People allergic to ergotamine and dihydroergotamine should keep away from it as well.
Patients with certain medical conditions need to consult a doctor to determine the safety of Permax use. Some of these medical conditions are lung related issues and breathing trouble, heart problems, kidney or liver problems, and any chronic inflammatory disease.
