Description of Protopic Ointment

Protopic Ointment has Tacrolimus as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the category of topical macrolide immune suppressants or topical calcineurin inhibitors. It is available in the form of a topical application. Each gram of the medicine contains 0.03 or 0.1% Tacrolimus, mineral oil, propylene carbonate, paraffin, white wax and white petrolatum.

Indications & Dosage of Protopic Ointment

Your doctor will recommend you to buy Protopic Ointment in order to treat eczema or atopic dermatitis. It is given to a patient only if he or she has not responded to other eczema drugs. Protopic Ointment works by weakening the immune system of the patient so that allergic reaction can be decreased and eczema can be relieved.

Your doctor will advise you to apply a thin layer of Protopic Ointment on the affected skin two times a day. Rub the ointment gently on the area and leave it on without using any occlusive dressing or bandage. Your symptoms should improve within 6 weeks of starting treatment. Inform your doctor if this does not happen.

Side Effects & Interactions of Protopic Ointment

Patients using Protopic Ointment may commonly experience mild itching, stinging or burning, skin redness, acne, headache, cold increased sensitivity to cold or hot items/temperatures, or flu symptoms including sneezing, stuffy nose or sore throat. These are mild side effects of the drug and subside on their own within a few days. However, inform your doctor at once if any of these become too bothersome. Some serious side effects associated with Protopic Ointment include:

Discontinue using the drug if you develop any of these symptoms after applying the ointment. Seek medical attention if required.
