Description of Reyataz

The active ingredient in Reyataz is Atazanavir, and it belongs to the class of antiviral medicines known as protease inhibitors. You can buy Reyataz in the form of oral capsules.

Indications & Dosage of Reyataz

Reyataz is indicated for the treatment of HIV. It works by preventing HIV viral cells from multiplying inside the patient’s body. You must remember that this medicine does not cure HIV or AIDS, but only controls the virus from worsening the condition.

Reyataz 200 to 400mg per day will be recommended to you depending on your medical condition and response to the treatment. Usually, you will also be advised to take Ritonavir along with this drug.

Take Reyataz capsules with food without opening, breaking or chewing them. You will have to swallow them whole. If you are taking buffered drugs or antacids as well, you will be advised to take Reyataz at least one hour after or two hours before these medications. As the amount of drug needs to be maintained at a constant level in the body, you must try to take Reyataz at almost the same time each day.

Side Effects & Interactions of Reyataz

If you are taking an HIV medicine for the first time, you may start experiencing symptoms of some old infection, as your immunity may have begun to work better. Inform your doctor at once if you develop trouble breathing, vision problems, fever, skin problems, headache or new cough.

Some serious side effects associated with Reyataz include:

  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin
  • Increased thirst or urination
  • Fast, irregular or slow heartbeat
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness
  • Signs of kidney stones, including painful urination, pain in the back, abdomen or side, blood in the urine
  • Signs of heart attack, including pain in the jaw, left arm or chest, unusual sweating, shortness of breath
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Throat soreness, fever and headache, along with severe peeling, blistering or red skin rash

These are some of the medicinal products with which your doctor will not advise you to buy Reyataz:

  • Antibiotics (e.g. clarithromycin or rifabutin)
  • Antifungal drugs (e.g. itraconazole or ketoconazole)
  • Antidepressants (e.g. amitriptyline or doxepin)
  • Blood thinners (e.g. warfarin)
  • Blood pressure or heart medicines (e.g. diltiazem or verapamil)
  • Cholesterol lowering drugs (e.g. atorvastatin or rosuvastatin)
  • Drugs that make your immune system weaker (e.g. cyclosporine or tacrolimus)
  • Heart rhythm medicines (e.g. amiodarone or quinidine)
  • Oral diabetes drugs or insulin
  • Medicines for treating erectile dysfunction (e.g. tadalafil or vardenafil)

Warnings & Precautions of Reyataz

Before starting Reyataz treatment, inform your doctor if you have a liver disease such as hepatitis B or C, kidney disease, if you are on dialysis, diabetes, bleeding disorder like hemophilia, heart condition like AV block, high cholesterol or triglycerides, or if you have used protease inhibitors in the past. Special tests will need to be taken, and dosage adjustments will need to be made if you have any of these medical conditions.
