Description of Samsca

The active ingredient in Samsca is Tolvaptan. It belongs to the class of vasopressin receptor antagonists. You can buy Samsca in the form of oral tablets.

Indications & Dosage of Samsca

Samsca is used for the treatment of low sodium level in blood of patients with liver disease, heart failure or certain hormonal imbalances. The medicine works by regulating the balance of salt and water in the patient’s body. It increases the amount of urine produced by your body, so that extra water can be expelled out.

Initially, you will be asked to take Samsca 15mg once a day. After 24 hours, the dosage can be increased to Samsca 30mg per day, depending on your therapeutic response to the drug. The maximum dosage a patient can receive is Samsca 60mg per day.

You can take the tablets with or without meals.

Side Effects & Interactions of Samsca

You will need to start Samsca treatment in a hospital setting. Correcting sodium levels in your blood rapidly can sometimes result in osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS). Symptoms of such a condition include trouble swallowing or speaking, mental or mood changes, confusion, seizures or involuntary movements, or weakness in the legs or arms.

Dry mouth, thirst, loss of appetite, weakness or constipation can commonly occur in patients who have recently started Samsca treatment. These symptoms are supposed to subside on their own within a few days. However, you must inform your doctor without fail if any of these persist or worsen.

You have more risks of becoming dehydrated during Samsca treatment, especially if you have persistent diarrhea or vomiting, or if you are not able to drink normally. Inform your doctor at once if you experience signs of dehydration, which include lightheadedness, dizziness or fast heartbeat.

People suffering from a severe liver disease such as cirrhosis have more risks of having bleeding from the intestines or stomach. Seek medical attention immediately if you develop signs such as vomiting with blood, black or bloody stools, or dark colored vomit.

Your doctor will not ask you to buy Samsca if you are already taking antidepressants (e.g. desipramine), antibiotics (e.g. doxycycline), barbiturates (e.g. Phenobarbital), diuretics (amiloride), blood pressure or heart medicines (e.g. benazepril), HIV or AIDS medicines (e.g. etravirine), anti-seizure drugs (e.g. carbamazepine), birth control pills, rifamycin (e.g. rifampin) or drugs such as aprepitant, cyclosporine, St. John’s wort, or potassium supplements. These may interact adversely with each other, or may interfere with each other’s working.

Warnings & Precautions of Samsca

Before starting Samsca treatment, inform your doctor if you suffer from alcohol abuse, liver or kidney disease or diabetes. As this medicine may increase your blood sugar levels, you should strictly follow the diet plan and exercise regime suggested by your doctor.

In order to prevent dehydration during Samsca treatment, drink lots of water and avoid becoming overheated due to strenuous physical activities, hot bath or exercise.

Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should use this drug with caution, as it is not yet known whether it is safe for such women and their children or not.
