Description of Sinemet CR
Sinemet CR is a combination drug containing two active ingredients- levodopa and carbidopa. Levodopa is an aromatic amino acid which metabolises into dopamine in the brain. Patients who have Parkinson’s disease need an increase in dopamine levels for the symptomatic treatment of this disorder. The neurotransmitter (dopamine), however, affects a patient adversely if released in other body parts. Carbidopa, being an inhibitor of aromatic amino acid enzymes, does not allow the metabolism of Levodopa in the body (it cannot cross the brain-blood barrier) and as such, reduces the chances of negative reactions. Each tablet of Sinemet CR tablet contains 1 part carbidopa and 4 parts levodopa.
Patients can buy Sinemet CR either as 50mg-200mg or as 25mg-100mg sustained release tablets.
The generic name of Sinemet CR is Carbidopa/Levodopa, and this medicine belongs to the group of dopaminergic agents.
Indications & Dosage of Sinemet CR
Sinemet CR is indicated in the treatment of idiopathic Parkinson’s disease or symptoms similar to or associated with Parkinson’s disease caused due to an injured nervous system.
Patients who buy Sinemet CR need to be in constant consultation with their doctors regarding dosage initiation, adjustments and maintenance. The administration of this drug follows a strict titration process.
Sinemet CR sustained release tablets should not be crushed, chewed, broken or dissolved while ingesting them. It is necessary that the tablets be swallowed whole to ensure an even and regulated supply of dopamine in the brain. There should be a minimum time gap of 4 to 6 hours between two consecutive doses.

Patients who are allergic to any ingredient in Sinemet CR, are below 18 years of age, have narrow angle glaucoma, skin cancer (or a history of) and have used an MAO inhibitor in the preceding fortnight should not use this drug.
Sinemet CR causes drowsiness. Patients should avoid alcohol and drugs that have a similar effect while using this medicine.
