Description of Spectracef

Spectracef or Cephalosporin antibiotic is used for treating acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis that are caused by bacterial infections. Such bronchitis is generally caused by H. parainfluenzae, Haemophilius influenzae, Streptococcus pnemoniae, or Moraxella catarrhalis.

Spectracef is also used for the treatment of tonsillitis and pharyngitis that are caused by S. pyogenes. This drug is very effective against most strains of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. However, this drug only works against bacterial infections and would not be effective against viral infections.

Other than these, it has also been found useful in treating skin problems created by S. aureus or S. pyogenes. The generic name of the drug Spectracef is Cefditoren pivoxil.

This drug is meant for oral administration only and you can buy Spectracef in the form of oral tablets that are available in the market. The oral tablets come in strength of Sepctracef 400 mg for treatment of bronchitis, while Spectracef 200mg is prescribed for treatment of pharyngitis and tonsillitis. This drug is prescribed for use by adults and adolescents who are above the age of 12 years.

Each tablet of Spectracef contains the active ingredient Cefditoren pivoxil. The inactive ingredients of this medicine include: D-mannitol, hypromellose, croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropyl cellulose, sodium trypolyphospate and sodium caseinate. The coating of this tablet is composed of: hypromellose, polythylene glycol, titanium dioxide and carnauba wax. The tablets are marked with propylene glycol and shellac.

Indications & Dosage of Spectracef

The recommended dosage of Spectracef is two times daily or as directed by your doctor. However, this medicine should always be had with meals and taken at the same time each day to keep in the body at a constant level. It is advisable to take this medicine two times daily after regular intervals for a few days until the symptoms of the bacterial infections completely disappear. However, stopping medication too early may result in the reappearance of the infections.
