Description of Zithromax

Zithromax has Azithromycin as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the therapeutic class of macrolide antibiotics. It is given to the patient in the form of oral capsules.

Indications & Dosage of Zithromax

Your doctor will recommend you to buy Zithromax in order to treat several types of bacterial infections, including respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections, sexually transmitted diseases, pneumonia, strep throat, tonsillitis and middle ear infections. It works by fighting the susceptible bacteria so that they do not multiply and spread in the patient’s body.

The treatment starts with Zithromax 600mg once a day. Depending on your response to the drug, your doctor may decide to increase the dosage. You can take the capsule with or without meals.

You should complete the full course of treatment even if your symptoms improve before that. The symptoms might have been relieved, but your infection may not have been treated. If you stop taking the medicine, the infection may return. Therefore, do not stop taking Zithromax without consulting your doctor.

Side Effects & Interactions of Zithromax

Some common side effects associated with Zithromax include:

  • Mild nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation
  • Stomach upset or pain
  • Dizziness, headache, tiredness
  • Nervousness, insomnia
  • Vaginal discharge or itching
  • Mild skin rash or itching
  • Ringing in the ears, problem with hearing
  • Decreased sense of smell or taste

These are mild side effects of Zithromax and subside as your body adjusts to the drug. However, you must inform your doctor if any of these persist or worsen even after completion of the treatment. Also seek medical attention if you encounter water or bloody diarrhea, chest pain, nausea, uneven heartbeat, dark urine, jaundice, clay-colored stools, loss of appetite, low fever, or stomach pain. A severe skin reaction may also occur, identified by skin pain, purple or red pinpoints under the skin, blistering, peeling, burning in the eyes, and swelling of the tongue or face.

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Zithromax if you are already using other antibiotics (such as clarithromycin or erythromycin), calcium channel blockers (such as felodipine or diltiazem), cholesterol lowering drugs (such as atorvastatin or lovastatin), ergot medicines (such as ergotamine or methysergide), HIV drugs (such as ritonavir or nelfinavir), blood thinners (such as warfarin) or drugs such as digoxin, carbamazepine, cyclosporine, phenytoin, pimozide, theophylline, triazolam, midazolam or diazepam.

Warnings & Precautions of Zithromax

Do not use Zithromax if you ever had a liver problem or jaundice due to Azithromycin. Also do not use it if you have an allergy to any antibiotics, or to any active or inactive ingredients of the drug. Inform your doctor beforehand if you have liver or kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, history of Long QT syndrome, or heart rhythm disorder.

As Zithromax can cause dizziness, avoid performing tasks that require complete alertness, such as driving vehicles or operating machines immediately after taking a dose. Also avoid alcohol, as severe dizziness because of this may lead to a serious accident.
