Description of Avalide

The drug Avalide is a combination of irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide. It is generally prescribed to treat hypertension. Hydrochlorothiazide is a substance that falls under the class of thiazide diuretics, which controls fluid retention. Irbesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker and prevents the narrowing of the blood vessels, thereby improving blood flow. The generic name of Avalide is irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide.

Indications & Dosage of Avalide

People mostly buy Avalide to treat hypertension. However, it can also be used to treat certain other blood pressure issues when in combination with other agents.

Avalide is available in drugstores in the form of tablets and comes in three strengths- Avalide 150/12.5mg, Avalide 300/12.5mg, and Avalide 300/25mg. The drug should be taken strictly according to the doctor’s prescription.

Since Avalide is a blood pressure medicine, its consumption may often make patients experience severe dehydration, as these substances keep the blood pressure in check by removing excess fluid from the body. Also, the blood pressure levels need to be checked regularly during the course of Avalide treatment.

Patience is key while using Avalide, because controlling blood pressure consistently with Avalide may take up to 4 weeks. The treatment must never be stopped without a doctor's OK even if a patient’s blood pressure has been normalized. Avalide tablets should be stored in a safe place at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture.

Side Effects & Indications of Avalide

People who buy Avalide and consume it may experience side effects. Some side effects are temporary and usually do not pose any major threat to the system. Some of the minor side effects of Avalide are as follows:

  • Headaches and dizziness;
  • Fatigue and drowsiness;
  • Runny nose;
  • Sore throat;
  • Muscle pain;
  • Heartburn and stomach pain

Apart from the aforementioned side effects, some serious side effects may also affect a few patients. These side effects often need urgent medical attention. Some of these side effects are:

  • Fainting;
  • Swelling in various parts of the body;
  • Weight issues;
  • Changes in urinating pattern;
  • Jaundice;
  • Certain vision problems;
  • Fever;
  • Irregular heartbeat

Interactions may also occur when using Avalide. Drug interactions generally surface when multiple substances possessing conflicting characteristics are taken within the same time period. Avalide is affected by the use of substances like steroids, diabetes medications, other blood pressure medications, barbiturates, NSAIDs, narcotic medications, muscle relaxers, etc. To avoid interactions of any sort, it is best to inform your doctor if multiple drugs are being consumed.

Warnings & Precautions of Avalide

Avalide should not be taken if a patient has allergic reactions to the ingredients present in it. Alcohol consumption should be totally stopped during the course of Avalide treatment as it can severely hamper blood pressure levels. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take the drug at all. If a patient has a kidney, liver, or heart condition or diabetes, it is best to consult the doctor before taking the drug. The use of Avalide may also lead to kidney failure. If there are signs of weakness, muscle pain, or darkening of urine, a doctor must be contacted immediately.
