When used in the form of an ophthalmic solution, Betoptic S is indicated for treating increased intra-ocular pressure (that is IOP) in patients who have ocular hypertension (or open angle glaucoma). The generic drug is a blocker of beta1 receptor. It shows selective affinity towards the receptors and therefore has much less systemic side-effects. This is the reason why it is preferred over other ophthalmic solutions. The drug acts by decreasing the synthesis of aqueous humor in the eyes.
