Description of Intuniv

Intuniv has Guanfacine as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the class of Central ά-2adrenergic-receptor agonists. You can buy Intuniv in the form of extended release tablets, available in 1, 2, 3 and 4mg strengths. Apart from the major ingredient, each tablet also contains glycerlyl behenate, fumaric acid, microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, povidone, lactose, methacrylic acid copolymer and hypromellose.

Indications & Dosage of Intuniv

Intuniv is used for treating ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children from 6 to 17 years of age. It is given to the patient as part of a complete treatment plan that includes educational, social as well as psychological measures. The drug works by affecting receptors in the patient’s brain that strengthen memory, attention, and impulse control, and reduce distraction. Intuniv helps in reducing symptoms of ADHD including disruption, hyperactivity, inattention, impulsiveness or losing temper.

Initially, you will be advised to take Intuniv 1mg per day. The dosage can be increased by Intuniv 1mg per week, until the desired effects are achieved. The maintenance dose can range from Intuniv 1 to 4mg per day, depending on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Do not take Intuniv tablets with a high-fat meal. Since these are extended release tablets, you should swallow them whole, without crushing, chewing or breaking them.

Side Effects & Interactions of Intuniv

Some of the common side effects that Intuniv patients can experience include:

  • Dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Weight gain
  • Stomach pain
  • Irritability
  • Headache

Also seek medical attention immediately if you develop any serious side effects of Intuniv. Symptoms of such side effects include pounding heartbeat, slow or fast heart rate, chest tightness, tingling or numbness. These may be signs of a serious underlying condition and need to be treated as soon as possible.

Some patients with hypersensitivity may develop an allergy after using Intuniv. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include facial swelling, hives, severe dizziness or difficulty breathing. Stop taking the drug immediately if you develop any of these symptoms. Seek medical attention at once if any of these persist even after discontinuing Intuniv.
