Description of Lactulose

Lactulose is a type of sugar used to treat chronic constipation. The generic name of the drug is Lactulose.

You can buy Lactulose as an over the counter medication. Read all the instructions on the patient information leaflet before administering the drug. You must take the medicine orally. Use a measuring spoon to measure the liquid form of Lactulose. You can mix the solution with water, soft dessert, or fruit juice to improve the taste. The liquid will be slightly darker in color. Indications & Dosage of Lactulose

Lactulose increases the bowel movements per day. It also increases the water content in the stool and softens the stool.

The recommended dosage of Lactulose in adults for chronic constipation is 50 mL once a day. The dosage for acute constipation in adults is 15 mL per day. The recommended dosage for children is 0.7 to 2 mL/kg. It will take at least 48 hours to see the first bowel movement. You must not start, stop or change the dose without consulting the doctor. If you are using the drug for a long time, you will have to conduct regular blood tests. Don’t share your medicine with others. You must not take a dosage of Lactulose that is larger than what is recommended, because it may lead to an overdose of Lactulose. The common symptoms of overdose are stomach pain, diarrhea, confusion, uneven heart rate, dry skin, and muscle weakness. Seek immediate medical attention in case of an overdose.
