Description of Norvasc
Norvasc is a calcium channel blocker with the generic name amlodipine. This medication works by relaxing blood vessels and improving blood flow through the body. You can buy Norvasc in the form of oral tablets in the following different dosage strengths- Norvasc 2.5mg, Norvasc 5mg and Norvasc 10mg. Apart from the active ingredient amlodipine, Norvasc also contains the following: sodium starch glycolate, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate and dibasic calcium phosphate.
Indications & Dosage of Norvasc
Norvasc is indicated for treating hypertension, angina and coronary artery disease, or CAD. Patients of or over the age of 6 years are suitable for taking Norvasc, but only if a doctor has prescribed it specifically.
Your doctor would determine the dosage and duration of treatment with Norvasc. In most cases of hypertension treatment, 5mg of this medication is taken a day, and the maximum dosage is kept at 10mg per day. However, young, elderly or fragile patients may be prescribed a starting dose of 2.5mg per day.
In case of angina treatment, the dosage of Norvasc is set at the range of 5mg to 10mg. A lower dose in this range would be suggested for inpatients or elderly patients. However, most patients would need to take Norvasc 10mg to achieve proper benefits from treatment. The same dosage would be recommended for patients suffering from coronary artery disease.
You may find your angina worsening when you begin treatment with Norvasc or if your dosage is increased. This would usually subside after sometime, but you must contact your doctor if you suffer from severe or continuous chest pain.
Norvasc would usually be recommended as only one part of a complete treatment program that includes exercise and diet control. You must follow all aspects of your treatment program properly along with Norvasc to get the maximum benefits.
In some cases, your doctor may prescribe Norvasc for life. If your doctor has told you to take this drug your whole life, you must keep your prescribed filled at all times to avoid problems in case you have no more Norvasc tablets.
