Description of Trecator

Trecator is an antibiotic medication with the generic name ethionamide. You can buy Trecator for the treatment of tuberculosis. It works by preventing the growth and spread of tuberculosis causing bacteria in the body. Apart from TB, your doctor may also prescribe Trecator for other medical purposes.

Indications & Dosage of Trecator

Trecator is available in the form of an orange colored tablet with a dosage strength of Trecator 250mg. The dosage and duration of treatment with Trecator would be determined by your doctor. For adults, the recommended dosage would be 15-20mg per kg of weight per day. In most cases, a single dose in a day would be appropriate. However, if the patient is suffering from stomach irritation or has low gastrointestinal tolerance, then the dose can be divided, with the maximum daily dose being 1g.

Regardless of the recommended dosage, you must follow your doctor’s prescription for using Trecator. Each tablet must be accompanied by a glass of water. You can take Trecator on an empty stomach or just after your food. However, it is best to take this tablet along with food, since it reduces the risk of a stomach upset.

You must continue taking Trecator for the entire duration of treatment. This medicine may reduce the severity of tuberculosis symptoms, but the infection would still be active. Therefore, you must keep taking Trecator even if you feel better.

Trecator may be a part of a complete treatment regimen for curing tuberculosis in patients. If you have been prescribed other drugs along with Trecator, you must take all of them as per your doctor’s instructions, and not just Trecator. In most cases, you would find that Trecator is combined with other tuberculosis drugs for the best effect.

Side Effects & Interactions of Trecator

Trecator is known to cause certain severe side effects that your doctor would have to be notified about. These side effects are given below:

  • Yellowing eyes or skin
  • Confusion or unusual behavior
  • Double vision, blurred vision
  • Seizures
  • Tingling sensation or numbness in the feet or hands
  • Dark urine

Trecator may also cause minor side effects, such as those given below:

  • Tremors
  • Skin rashes
  • Vomiting, loss of appetite, nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Excessive salivation
  • Headache
  • Metallic taste in the mouth
  • Unusual weakness or fatigue

Trecator is known to interact with certain drugs such as isoniazid and cycloserine. You must inform your doctor about any drugs you are currently taking or have recently taken before you buy Trecator.

Warnings & Precautions of Trecator

The usage of Trecator as a lone drug for treating tuberculosis is not recommended and is therefore barely followed. This is because the lone usage of this medication can cause rapid resistance toward the drug in tuberculosis bacteria. Therefore, other suitable drug/drugs have to be taken along with Trecator. Before you buy Trecator, you must let your doctor know if you suffer from diabetes, liver disease, or if you have previously suffered from an allergic reaction to ethionamide.
