Description of Abilify

Abilify, with active ingredient Aripiprazole, is an antipsychotic drug. This drug is meant for oral or intramuscular administration. You can buy Abilify in form of oral tablets, oral liquid solution, or single-dose vials for intramuscular administration.

The oral tablets are available in following strengths: 10mg, 15mg, 20mg, and 30mg. The oral solution is available in strength, Abilify 1 mg/ml. The single-dose vials are available in strength, Abilify 9.75 mg/1.3 ml.

Indications & Dosage of Abilify

Abilify is indicated for treatment of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in adults. It is also used in combination with other drugs to treat recurrent depressive disorders in patients above 18 years of age.

Abilify is indicated for use in children above 6 years who have autistic disorder and show recurring symptoms of mood swings, aggression, self-injury, and temper-tantrums.

The recommended initial dosage range of Abilify in adult patients is 10mg per day or 15mg per day. Depending on the patient’s response, the dosage may be gradually increased. The recommended dosage in adolescent patients is Abilify 10mg per day.

Abilify is administered once a day. You may take this drug with or without food. You should store this drug at room temperature between 15°-30°C.

Side Effects & Interactions of Abilify

The side effects of this antipsychotic drug are divided in two categories, less severe and severe. Some of the common less severe side effects associated with Aripiprazole are:

  • Anxiety
  • Weight gain
  • Insomnia
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Epigastric distress (constipation, diarrhea, stomach upset, gas, bloating)
  • Dizziness, sleepiness, drowsiness

You should consult your doctor if you experience any of the following severe side effects during treatment:

  • Signs of allergic reaction – severe skin rashes or itching, facial flushing, trouble breathing, wheezing, hives, or swelling of the upper face
  • Signs of liver damage – dark urine, low fever, black or clay-colored stools, loss of appetite, nausea, or yellow eyes or skin
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements
  • Seizures
  • Speech, vision, or balance problems

Certain drugs, such as muscle relaxers, narcotic pain drugs, allergy or cold medicines, anti-seizure drugs, or sleeping pills, may increase the sedative effects of Abilify. Inform your doctor, in advance, if you are taking any of these drugs.

Other drugs that may interact with this antipsychotic drug include:

  • Drugs used for treating heart problems or hypertension
  • Quinidine
  • Phenobarbital, phenytoin, or carbamazepine
  • Itraconazole
  • Fluvoxamine, paroxetine, or fluoxetine

Warnings & Precautions of Abilify

Abilify should never be used for treating dementia-associated psychosis. This drug may cause potentially fatal side effects, such as pneumonia or heart failure, and even death in elderly patients with dementia-associated conditions.

Abilify may increase the risk of suicidality in adolescents, young adults below 24 years, and children. Such patients should be monitored closely, especially during the start of the treatment.

Abilify is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to any ingredient used in the drug.

Patients should inform their doctor if they have/have had any of the following medical conditions:

  • Epilepsy or seizure
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart rhythm disorders, hypertension, heart disease
  • Liver disease
  • Stroke
  • Cardiovascular attack

The safety of Abilify in nursing and pregnant women has not been studied. If you are breastfeeding or pregnant, consult your physician before using this drug.
