Description of Actonel

Actonel is a drug generally used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in both men and women. It can also be used to treat Paget’s disease of the bones. The chief ingredient in Actonel is risedronate, which plays a key part in altering the bone formation cycle of the body. This alteration involves the increase of bone mass and the slowing of bone loss, thus leading to lesser chances of fractures. The drug falls under a family of drugs known as bisphosphonates. The generic name of Actonel is risedronate.

Indications & Dosage of Actonel

Actonel is indicated for treating and/or preventing osteoporosis and Paget’s disease of the bones in men and women.

Actonel is sold in the form of tablets and is available in five different strengths- Actonel 5mg, Actonel 30mg, Actonel 35mg, Actonel 75mg and Actonel 150mg.

Actonel should be taken with a full glass of water at least 30 minutes before consuming any other substance. Only plain water should be used, as mineral water may lead to complications. It is also recommended to stay upright for half an hour after taking Actonel. The daily dosage is entirely dependent on the doctor’s prescription. The pill should be swallowed at once and not crushed or chewed.

Tests regarding bone mineral density need to be conducted often for Actonel users. As such, appointments should not be skipped. Last but not least, the drug should be stored at room temperature, away from excess moisture and heat.

Side effects & Interactions of Actonel

People who buy Actonel should be aware of the side effects they might experience after using the drug. Some side effects are minor in nature and do not need medical attention. Some of these side effects are as follows:

  • Stomach pain and ache;
  • Constipation and diarrhea;
  • Headaches;
  • Joint and back problems;
  • Muscle issues;
  • Flu symptoms

There are certain other side effects that users may experience as well, but these are far more severe in nature and often require urgent medical help. Some of these side effects are:

  • Swallowing issues;
  • Severe heartburn;
  • Problems with digestion;
  • Severe joint and muscle pain;
  • Severe pain in the thigh region;
  • Chest pain;
  • Unusual pain in the jaw or jaw numbness;
  • Swelling

Drug interactions are likely to occur if a substance which has conflicting characteristics is taken along with Actonel. Actonel has a high chance of interacting with aspirin and other NSAIDs. It is best to stay away from the drug if one is taking substances with which Actonel may interact. Consulting the doctor is the best way to avoid drug interactions.

Warnings & Precautions of Actonel

People who buy Actonel and use it should know the dos and don’ts before taking the medication. People who have allergies to the ingredients should avoid Actonel. People who are unable to stay upright should also never use the drug. People who have suffered from kidney, Vitamin D and stomach ulcer problems should check with a doctor to determine the safety of Actonel use. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also consult a doctor before taking Actonel.
