Description of Actonel

Actonel is a drug generally used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in both men and women. It can also be used to treat Paget’s disease of the bones. The chief ingredient in Actonel is risedronate, which plays a key part in altering the bone formation cycle of the body. This alteration involves the increase of bone mass and the slowing of bone loss, thus leading to lesser chances of fractures. The drug falls under a family of drugs known as bisphosphonates. The generic name of Actonel is risedronate.

Indications & Dosage of Actonel

Actonel is indicated for treating and/or preventing osteoporosis and Paget’s disease of the bones in men and women.

Actonel is sold in the form of tablets and is available in five different strengths- Actonel 5mg, Actonel 30mg, Actonel 35mg, Actonel 75mg and Actonel 150mg.

Actonel should be taken with a full glass of water at least 30 minutes before consuming any other substance. Only plain water should be used, as mineral water may lead to complications. It is also recommended to stay upright for half an hour after taking Actonel. The daily dosage is entirely dependent on the doctor’s prescription. The pill should be swallowed at once and not crushed or chewed.
