Description of Aldactone

Aldactone has Spironolactone as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the class of potassium sparing diuretics. You can buy Aldactone in the form of an oral tablet, available in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg strengths. The medicine also contains inactive ingredients including calcium sulfate, hypromellose, corn starch, iron oxide, flavor, titanium dioxide, povidone, polyethylene glycol and magnesium stearate. Do not use Aldactone if you have allergy to any of these ingredients.

Indications & Dosage of Aldactone

Aldactone is used for the treatment of high blood pressure. Keeping blood pressure under control helps prevent several medical conditions including kidney damage, heart attacks and strokes. Aldactone can also be used for treating edema or swelling caused due to conditions such as congestive heart failure. The drug works by preventing absorption of too much salt by your body and keeping the potassium levels from going too low.

Sometimes, Aldactone can also be used for treating low potassium levels in the body, or a condition in which your body produces too much Aldosterone. Women with polycystic ovary disease can also use it for treating hirsutism or excessive hair growth.

For treating hypertension, you will be advised to take Aldactone 50 to 100mg per day. For treating edema, the treatment will start with Aldactone 100mg per day. Aldactone 25 to 100mg will be required for treating hypokalemia.

Take the tablet with a full glass of water. Try to take it at almost the same time each day.

Side Effects & Interactions of Aldactone

Skin rash, stomach pain, gas, headache, dizziness, vomiting or mild nausea can be commonly experienced by Aldactone patients. However, inform your doctor at once if any of these symptoms become too bothersome. Also seek medical attention immediately if you develop any serious side effects of the drug. Symptoms of such side effects include:

  • Tingling or numbness
  • Muscle weakness or pain
  • Drowsiness, lightheadedness, restlessness
  • Uneven, fast or slow heartbeat
  • Stopped or decreased urination
  • Confusion, tremors
  • Shallow breathing
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin, clay-colored stools, dark urine, loss of appetite, itching, upper stomach pain, nausea
  • Severe skin reactions, symptoms of which include swelling of the tongue or face, throat soreness, fever, burning in eyes, blistering, peeling, skin pain, purple or red skin rash spreading to upper parts of the body, including the face.

Before you buy Aldactone, inform your doctor if you are already using a steroid (such as fluticasone or prednisone), ACE inhibitor (such as captopril or benazepril) or NSAID (such as naproxen or ibuprofen). As this drug makes you drowsy, do not take it along with any other medicines that cause the same effect, including sedatives, narcotic pain relievers, muscle relaxants, antidepressants or anti-seizure or anti-anxiety drugs.

Warnings & Precautions of Aldactone

Aldactone is not meant to be used by patients who have kidney disease, inability to urinate, or hyperkalemia. Special tests and dosage adjustments will be needed if you have a liver or kidney disease.

Breastfeeding mothers should not use Aldactone, as it may pass into breast milk and harm the nursing baby.
