Description of Banzel

Banzel is an anti-epileptic medication with the generic name rufinamide, which belongs to the drug class known as anticonvulsants. You can buy Banzel as part of a combination of other medicines for the treatment of seizures that occur due to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. This particular medical condition is a serious form of childhood epilepsy that can lead to behavioral and developmental problems. Banzel is available in the form of film coated tablets. The medicine can be bought in two distinct strengths- Banzel 200mg and Banzel 400mg. Banzel is also available as an orange colored oral suspension liquid that contains 40mg of rufinamide per ml.

Indications & Dosage of Banzel

Banzel is indicated for the supplementary or additional treatment of seizures induced due to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome among patients that are of or above the age of 4 years. Banzel is usually given along with food in order to avoid stomach problems. The tablets can be administered either as full tablets, half tablets or completely crushed powder to suit the patient’s requirements. Your doctor would recommend the best method of giving this drug.

The oral suspension form of Banzel must be shaken properly before measurement so that the contents of the suspension mix well. You may be provided an oral dosing syringe or adapter to administer the suspension. Your doctor would explain how to use them beforehand. If you have any doubts related to this matter, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist or refer to the dosing instructions that come with the medicine.

For children older than 4 years of age, the recommended daily dose is determined according to body weight, with 10mg of Banzel for each kg. The daily dose would usually be administered in 2 equal doses. The dose may then be increased in increments of 10mg/kg every alternate day until a target dose of 3200mg or 45mg/kg is reached, depending on which is lower.

For adults, the starting daily dosage is recommended to be kept at 400mg to 800mg, in 2 equal doses. The target dose would once again be 3200mg, with increments of 400mg to 800mg every alternate day.
