Description of Cerenia

Cerenia tablets are used to treat dogs with acute vomiting or prevention of motion sickness-induced vomiting. The tablets act as a neurokinin receptor which blocks the pharmacological action of the substance P in the central nervous system. It is a non-proprietary designation substituted for quinuclidine. You can buy Cerenia as scored tablets. It is recommended for use in dogs aged 16 weeks or older.

Cerenia tablets should be stored at 20°C to 25°C or controlled room temperature and excursions may be allowed at 15°C to 30°C. It is available in the form of peach colored scored tablets with a break line. Each tablet contains 16, 24, 60 or 160 mg of maropitant as maropitant citrate. The letters ‘MPT’ is marked on each tablet, the tablet strength on one side and the Pfizer logo on the other side. It is packaged as each tablet size in blister packs of 4 tablets per perforated sheet.

Indications & Dosage of Cerenia

Cerenia tablets are indicated for dogs with vomiting tendencies or to prevent motion sickness-induced vomiting.

To prevent or treat acute vomiting :

Orally administer a minimum dose of 2 mg/kg of weight, once daily for up to 5 consecutive days. It may be used interchangeably with Cerenia inject able solution, once daily dosing for 5 consecutive days to prevent acute vomiting.

To prevent vomiting due to motion sickness :

Administer Cerenia tablets at a minimum dose of 8mg/kg of weight, orally once daily for up to 2 consecutive days. The dogs should be fasted 1 hour prior to administration of dose, and 1 tablet should be administered 2 hours before travel.

Side Effects & Interactions of Cerenia

There are many known side effects of Cerenia.

During the treatment for acute vomiting :

  • Diarrhea, bloody stool, anorexia, otorrhea, endotoxic shock, hematuria, excoriation.

During the treatment and prevention of vomiting due to motion sickness :

  • Hypersalivation, vomiting, muscle tremors, depression, flatulence, retching.

Warnings & Precautions of Cerenia

It should be remembered before you buy Cerenia, that the drug is not for use in humans. It should be kept out of reach of children. If accidentally ingested, medical help should be sought immediately. In some rare cases, the drug may cause topical localized allergic skin reactions and prolonged exposure may cause skin sensitization in some individuals.
