Description of Crixivan

Crixivan is an anti-viral medicine belonging to the group of protease inhibitors. The active ingredient in the medicine is Indinavir. It is given to the patient in the form of oral capsules.

Indications & Dosage of Crixivan

Crixivan is used for the treatment of HIV, a viral infection that causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or AIDS. You must remember that this drug is not a cure for AIDS, but can only control its symptoms. Crixivan works by preventing HIV from multiplying in the patient’s body.

The usual recommended dosage is two Crixivan 400mg capsules every 8 hours.

Usually, your doctor will advise you to take the capsules without food. You will have to take it 2 hours after or one hour before a meal. You can also take the capsules with skimmed milk, coffee, tea, milk or a light meal such as dry toast with juice, jelly, coffee, corn flakes, sugar and skimmed milk. During Crixivan treatment, you will be advised to drink 1.5 liters of liquids per day.

Side Effects & Interactions of Crixivan

Crixivan patients may commonly experience the following mild side effects of the drug:

  • Mild vomiting, nausea, bloating, diarrhea
  • Tingling or numbness around the mouth
  • Tiredness
  • Headache or mood changes
  • Changes in the location or shape of body fat, especially in the face, legs, arms, waist, breasts and neck

Some serious side effects associated with Crixivan include:

  • Yellowed or pale skin, fever, weakness, confusion, or dark colored urine
  • Fever, headache, throat soreness with severe peeling, redness or blistering of the skin
  • Extreme thirst and increased urination
  • Blood in the urine, pain in the lower back or side
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Signs of a new infection, including flu symptoms, cough, chills and fever
  • Stomach pain, loss of appetite, nausea, dark urine, low fever, jaundice, yellowing of the eyes or skin, clay-colored stools

Some of the medicinal products that can interact adversely with Crixivan include:

  • Antibiotics (e.g. clarithromycin or ketoconazole)
  • Antidepressants (e.g. trazodone)
  • Calcium channel blockers (e.g. amlodipine or nifedipine)
  • Cholesterol lowering medicines (e.g. atorvastatin or simvastatin)
  • Drugs affecting the immune system (e.g. cyclosporine or tacrolimus)
  • Oral diabetes drugs or insulin
  • Heart rhythm medicines (e.g. quinidine)
  • Anti-seizure drugs (e.g. carbamazepine)
  • Medicines for treating erectile dysfunction (e.g. sildenafil)
  • Other HIV medications (e.g. atazanavir or lopinavir)

Warnings & Precautions of Crixivan

Before you buy Crixivan, inform your doctor if you have a liver or kidney disease, kidney stones, diabetes, high cholesterol, or a bleeding disorder like hemophilia. Special tests will be required before starting Crixivan treatment.

This medicine is not meant to be used by pregnant women, as it can prove harmful for the unborn baby. Women suffering from AIDS should also not breastfeed their new born child, as the virus may get transferred to their baby through their breast milk. You must remember that Crixivan is not a cure for AIDS, and that it only controls its symptoms.
