Description of Intal

Intal is an anti-inflammatory drug used for the prevention and management of asthma. You can buy Intal under the generic name Cromolyn Sodium. This is a potent medication that prevents the release of substances that cause inflammation, thereby preventing allergic reactions in the body.

Intal is available in the form of an inhaler as well as a nebulizer solution. You can buy Intal online in the following strengths: Intal 8.1 gram inhaler that provides 112 metered dose actuations, and the Intal 14.2 gram inhaler providing 200 metered dose actuations.

Indications & Dosage of Intal

Intal is known to reduce inflammation in the lungs, making it easier to breathe and prevent asthma attacks. It is also indicated to prevent breathlessness caused by exercise and can offer immediate relief.

Cromolyn Sodium acts directly in the lungs. This reduces the intensity of side effects as the amount absorbed into the blood through the lungs is lower than the one taken orally. The recommended dosage for adults and children over 5 years of age is 2 mL, inhaled four times a day. For children, a lower dosage might be sufficient.

For prevention of asthma attacks caused due to exercise or exposure to an allergen, the usual dose is two inhalations taken 10-15 minutes before exercising. It is best to add Intal inhalations to your existing treatment regime, as it is a preventative drug and should not be used as a replacement for the regular asthma medication.

Side Effects & Interactions of Intal

Cromolyn Sodium is considered a safe medication and is not likely to cause any serious side effects. Some of the mild reactions you may experience with this drug are:

  • cough
  • throat irritation
  • dryness of the mouth
  • soreness in the nasal lining

In rare cases, Intal inhalations might result in:

  • increase in breathing difficulties
  • swelling of the mouth, lips and throat
  • severe allergic responses such as hives
  • increased pressure in the eyes/ glaucoma
  • joint pain and swelling

If any of the above symptoms occur, discontinue using Intal and consult your health practitioner at the earliest possible time.

While there are no significant drug interactions reported with Intal, it should not be used concomitantly with Ipratropium nebulizer solution (available under the brand name Atrovent), as these two medications are not compatible with each other. Most doctors recommend using a reliever inhaler before taking Cromolyn Sodium inhalations, as it helps in opening up the airways and allows better for absorption of the medication.

Warnings & Precautions of Intal

Intal patients have occasionally reported an increase in cough and bronchospasm following inhalations. This medication is not recommended if you are hypersensitive or allergic to any of the ingredients present in Intal.

Consult your doctor before you buy Intal, especially if you have any of the following medical conditions:

  • Kidney disorders including renal failure
  • Liver problems
  • Allergies to certain food products, dyes or preservatives
  • Serious lung infections

It is not known if inhaled Cromolyn Sodium passes into breast milk, so lactating and pregnant mothers should consult their doctor before using this drug.
