Description of Interceptor
Interceptor is a prescription drug for dogs and cats, and its generic name is Milbemycin Oxime. It falls under the category of anti-parasitic veterinary drugs. You can buy Interceptor in the form of an oral chewable tablet.
Indications & Dosage of Interceptor
Interceptor is the only oral medication for cats used for preventing heartworms and removing adult roundworms and hookworms. It works by eliminating the larvae of heartworms in their tissue stage, and whipworms, roundworms and hookworms in their adult stage. As Milbemycin Oxime interferes with neurotransmissions of the invertebrates, these parasites are destroyed, and the pet is rendered parasite-free.
The dosage recommended for a pet depends on whether you have a cat or dog, and what its weight is. Dogs weighing 2 to 10 pounds are given Interceptor 2.3mg, 11 to 25 pounds are giving Interceptor 5.75mg, 26 to 50 pounds are 11.5mg and 51 to 100 pounds are given 23mg once per month.
Cats weighing 1.5 to 6 pounds are given Interceptor 5.75mg, 6.1 to 12 pounds are given 11.5mg and 12.1 to 25lbs are given 23mg per month.
Do not remove the tablets from their wrapper, unless the pet is ready to take it. Keep the tablets at room temperature, away from the reach of children or pets.
Side Effects & Interactions of Interceptor
Interceptor is not known to cause any side effects in pets. However, some of them may experience drowsiness, loss of appetite, depression, hyper-salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures or weakness. Although these are mild side effects of the drug, you should contact the veterinarian immediately if any of these worsen or persist.
Inform the veterinarian immediately if the pet suffers from staggering during Interceptor treatment. This can be a sign of some serious underlying problem.
Some pets may also develop an allergic reaction, symptoms of which include hives, extreme restlessness, difficulty breathing, excessive drooling or swelling on any part of body. Stop using the medicine immediately if your pet develops any of these symptoms. Seek help from the veterinarian if needed.
Before you buy Interceptor, inform the veterinarian about any anti-parasitic drug you are giving to your pet at present, including topical applications and oral medicines. Do not forget to include any health supplements and vitamins too. Special precautions will be needed if you are already giving azole antifungals such as ketoconazole, erythromycin, clarithromycin or quinidine to your pet. Based on this information, the veterinarian will be able to decide whether Interceptor is the right product for your pet or not.
Warnings & Precautions of Interceptor
Interceptor is meant to be used only if your cat is at least 6 weeks of age and your dog is at least 4 weeks of age. The cat should weigh at least 1.5 pounds and dog should weigh at least 2 pounds. Younger or lighter pets may have increased risks of developing serious side effects of the drug. Also inform the veterinarian beforehand if your pet is pregnant, lactating or breeding.
