What is a Generic?

Description of Keppra XR

Keppra XR is a drug with the generic name levetiracetam, which belongs to the drug class of antiepileptic drugs. You can buy Keppra XR for the treatment of partial onset seizures in patients who are 4 years or older. Apart from partial onset seizures, this drug is also used for the treatment of myoclonic and tonic-clonic seizures in patients who are 12 years or older.

Indications & Dosage of Keppra XR

Keppra XR is available as an extended release tablet in two different strengths- 500mg and 750mg. The tablet to be taken, its daily dosage and the duration of treatment would be determined by your doctor. Do not take a dose larger than what has been determined, and do not take Keppra XR for longer than the prescribed duration. If your doctor makes changes in your prescription to achieve optimum results, then you must abide by it.

Keppra XR must be swallowed along with water. However, it may be taken with or without food. Since the drug is an extended release tablet, it must not be chewed, broken or crushed. By doing so, an excessive amount of Keppra XR may enter the bloodstream and cause an overdose. Keppra XR may be prescribed for a long duration of time. If so, you must refill your prescription from time to time so that you do not miss out on any dose.

Do not stop taking Keppra XR suddenly without consulting your doctor, irrespective of whether you feel alright or not. By stopping your daily dose of Keppra XR suddenly, you may suffer from increased seizures.

Warnings & Precautions of Keppra XR

You must not buy Keppra XR if you have previously suffered from an allergy to levetiracetam. This drug is known to induce suicidal thoughts, especially during the initial months of Keppra XR treatment or the period following a change in dosage. You must inform your doctor if you suffer from any such thoughts while you are on this medicine. In order to diagnose any problems, your doctor may schedule regular visits during the initial phase.
